Chapter 1 - THE MOMENT MY HUSBAND LET ME FALL

My husband kissed my forehead three seconds before he pushed me out of the helicopter.
That was the part I would remember forever.
Not the roar of the engine.
Not the freezing wind cutting through my clothes.
Not the terrifying sight of the Pacific Ocean rushing toward me thousands of feet below.
It was that gentle kiss.
Because for one brief moment, I believed Richard still loved me.
Then his hands moved.
And my husband became the man who tried to murder me.
“Richard…”
My voice barely came out.
I stared at him, searching his face for any sign that this was some horrible misunderstanding.
A joke.
A mistake.
Anything.
But there was nothing.
The warmth I had known for years was gone.
His eyes were empty.
Cold.
Calculated.
“I'm sorry,” he whispered.
Those two words hurt more than the fall.
Then he pushed.
The world disappeared.
The helicopter vanished above me.
My scream was swallowed by the wind.
For several seconds, my mind refused to understand what was happening.
My hands reached for him.
For the helicopter.
For anything.
But there was nothing.
Only air.
Only the ocean.
Only the terrifying realization that the man who promised to protect me had just tried to kill me.
My first thought was not revenge.
It was my baby.
My hand instantly covered my stomach.
“No… no…”
I could not let this happen.
Not to my child.
Not like this.
The fear almost froze me.
Almost.
Then training and preparation took over.
My fingers moved beneath my jacket.
I searched for the small handle hidden inside.
The emergency parachute.
The one thing Richard never knew about.
The one thing he never expected.
I pulled.
Nothing happened.
My heart stopped.
“No…”
The ocean was getting closer.
I pulled again.
Then suddenly—
The pack exploded open.
The force nearly ripped my shoulders apart.
The spinning stopped.
I looked upward.
A white parachute stretched against the blue California sky.
I was alive.
My baby was alive.
But Richard believed I was dead.
And that was his biggest mistake.
Because he did not know something important.
I had been preparing for him long before that helicopter ride.
---
Three months earlier, I still believed Richard was the perfect husband.
That was the hardest part to admit.
Because when people heard my story later, they always asked the same question.
“How did you not see it?”
The truth?
I did see it.
I just didn't want to believe it.
Love makes you explain away things you would immediately recognize in anyone else.
Richard was charming.
Successful.
Patient.
The kind of man everyone liked within five minutes.
At charity events, people called us the perfect couple.
A billionaire technology executive and the handsome businessman who stood beside her.
They saw the photographs.
They saw the smiles.
They did not see the questions.
The questions started small.
“Do you know what happens to your trust if something happens to you?”
I looked up from my laptop.
“What do you mean?”
Richard smiled.
“Nothing serious. We are married. I just think I should understand our financial situation.”
It sounded reasonable.
So I answered.
Then another question came.
“What happens to your company shares?”
Then another.
“Would I manage everything for our child?”
At first, I thought he was being responsible.
We were expecting our first baby.
Maybe he was thinking about the future.
Maybe I was being unfair.
Until his questions changed.
They stopped being about our family.
They became about my death.
---
One night, I found Richard sitting in his office after midnight.
That was unusual.
He normally came to bed early.
“What are you doing?”
He quickly closed his laptop.
“Work.”
I smiled slightly.
“Since when do you hide your work from me?”
His expression changed for half a second.
Then he laughed.
“I’m not hiding anything.”
Maybe I would have believed him.
If I had not seen the document on his desk.
A copy of my estate plan.
With certain sections highlighted.
I walked closer.
“What is this?”
Richard stood immediately.
“Nothing.”
“Why do you have my will?”
His jaw tightened.
“It was just something I wanted to understand.”
I stared at him.
Something inside me became very quiet.
Because sometimes your instincts know the truth before your mind accepts it.
---
The next morning, I called the only person who could help me.
Evelyn Shaw.
My father's attorney.
She had protected my family for twenty years.
When I finished explaining everything, she remained silent.
Then she asked:
“Do you think Richard is capable of hurting you?”
I looked out the window.
At the life I had built.
At the house where I thought I was safe.
At the nursery we had prepared for our baby.
I wanted to say no.
But the word would not come.
“I don't know.”
Evelyn sighed.
And that scared me more than anything.
Because Evelyn was not the kind of person who scared easily.
“Then we need to prepare for the possibility that you are right.”
I closed my eyes.
At that moment, I still hoped she was wrong.
I prayed she was wrong.
But three months later…
I would be falling from a helicopter because she was right.
