Chapter 3 - THE FIRST LIE

Chloe stared at the flash drive.

“What’s on it?”

Daniel answered too quickly.

“Nothing.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“That’s interesting.”

He clenched his jaw.

“You’ve always liked theatrics.”

“And you’ve always underestimated paperwork.”

Marcus took the flash drive from Evelyn.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Don’t.”

Marcus paused.

Daniel pointed toward the stage.

“You play anything from that drive and I’ll sue you.”

Marcus smiled without humor.

“You’re standing in a house you falsely claimed to own while threatening the actual owner.”

A few guests laughed nervously.

Marcus continued.

“I’m comfortable with my chances.”

Daniel turned to Evelyn.

“What do you want?”

That was the first honest thing he had said all night.

Evelyn studied him.

“I want the truth to stop costing everyone except you.”

His expression hardened.

Chloe folded her arms.

“Play it.”

Daniel turned.

“Chloe, listen to me.”

“No.”

“Please.”

That stopped her.

Daniel Mercer never said please.

Not unless he was afraid.

Chloe looked at Marcus.

“Play it.”

Marcus walked to the audio station.

Daniel started after him.

Evelyn blocked his path.

For one second, they stood face-to-face.

Close enough for her to smell the cedar cologne he had worn their entire marriage.

Once, that scent meant home.

Now it made her stomach turn.

“Move,” he said.

“No.”

“This doesn’t concern you anymore.”

She stared at him.

“You used my name.”

His eyes shifted.

“You used my property.”

Silence.

“You used my company accounts.”

His jaw tightened.

“And now you’re using another woman.”

Chloe flinched.

Daniel leaned closer.

“You think humiliating me fixes what happened between us?”

“No.”

Evelyn’s voice dropped.

“But it might stop what you’re about to do to her.”

Daniel laughed softly.

“You’re jealous.”

Evelyn smiled.

“Daniel, you’re wearing rented cuff links.”

His face changed.

She leaned closer.

“I’m not jealous.”

Behind them, the speakers clicked.

Then a man’s voice filled the ballroom.

Daniel’s voice.

Recorded.

“Once the Whitmore deal closes, I don’t need Evelyn anymore.”

Chloe went still.

Another voice answered.

A lawyer.

“Her name is still attached to the trust.”

Daniel’s recorded voice laughed.

“For now.”

The ballroom exploded with whispers.

Chloe turned slowly.

“What deal?”

Daniel rushed toward the stage.

“Turn that off!”

Marcus blocked him.

The recording continued.

“If Chloe signs after the wedding, her father’s shares become accessible through the marital structure.”

Chloe’s face turned white.

Evelyn watched her.

The poor girl finally understood.

This had never been a love story.

It was an acquisition.

Daniel reached for the soundboard.

Marcus shoved him back.

“Don’t touch me!” Daniel shouted.

The room went silent again.

The recording kept playing.

Chloe’s father’s name came next.

Arthur Whitmore.

Then numbers.

Then shell companies.

Then a plan.

A very deliberate plan.

Daniel was going to marry Chloe, gain leverage over Whitmore Capital, refinance assets through accounts tied to Cross Holdings, and disappear before anyone realized what he had done.

Chloe backed away from him.

“No.”

Daniel turned.

“It’s fake.”

Evelyn stared at him.

“Then sue me.”

He looked at her.

“Gladly.”

“Under oath.”

That stopped him.

Evelyn stepped closer.

“Because if you claim that recording is fake, I’ll submit the original metadata.”

Daniel said nothing.

“And the emails.”

Nothing.

“And the wire transfers.”

Chloe started crying.

Not quietly.

Not gracefully.

She covered her mouth and shook.

Daniel moved toward her.

“Chloe, baby—”

“Don’t.”

He stopped.

She removed her engagement ring.

Every guest watched.

For one hopeful second, Evelyn thought Chloe would throw it at him.

Instead, Chloe gripped it in her fist.

“How much of it was fake?”

Daniel looked around the room.

Then at Evelyn.

Something colder entered his face.

“You really want to do this publicly?”

Evelyn answered without hesitation.

“Yes.”

Daniel gave a strange smile.

“All right.”

He straightened his jacket.

“Then let’s talk about why you actually left me.”

Evelyn’s expression froze.

Daniel turned toward the crowd.

“You all think she’s the victim?”

May you like

He laughed.

“Ask Evelyn what happened the night her brother died.”
