Chapter 2 - THE MAN WHO BORROWED A LIFE

Chloe laughed.
It was too loud.
Too sharp.
Too desperate.
“That’s not funny.”
Nobody joined her.
Marcus lowered the microphone slightly.
“I’m not joking.”
Chloe turned to Daniel.
“Tell him.”
Daniel said nothing.
She grabbed his arm.
“Daniel. Tell him this is your house.”
Evelyn watched him carefully.
He looked trapped.
Exactly how she wanted him.
Chloe’s voice cracked.
“You told me your grandfather built this place.”
A man near the bar coughed awkwardly.
Daniel glanced around the ballroom.
Every face was watching him.
Waiting.
Judging.
He straightened his tuxedo.
“It’s complicated.”
Evelyn almost laughed.
Chloe stared at him.
“What does that mean?”
Daniel finally looked at her.
“Evelyn and I have history.”
“History?”
“Yes.”
“What kind of history?”
Evelyn answered for him.
“We were married.”
A woman in a red dress covered her mouth.
Chloe froze.
Then she shook her head.
“No.”
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
“Chloe—”
“No.”
She stepped away from him.
“You told me you were divorced five years ago.”
Evelyn’s eyes sharpened.
“That’s impressive.”
Chloe looked at her.
“Why?”
“Because Daniel and I separated eleven months ago.”
The room erupted.
Voices everywhere.
“What?”
“He lied?”
“They were still married?”
“Oh my God.”
Chloe looked like someone had hit her.
“You said she abandoned you.”
Daniel snapped, “She did.”
Evelyn’s face changed.
Barely.
But enough.
Daniel pointed at her.
“She disappeared.”
“I left.”
“Without warning.”
“I left after you emptied one of my accounts.”
His face tightened.
Guests leaned closer.
Chloe whispered, “What account?”
Daniel ignored her.
“You don’t get to rewrite what happened.”
Evelyn stepped toward him.
“I don’t need to rewrite anything.”
Her voice remained calm.
“That’s what records are for.”
Daniel’s confidence flickered.
Just once.
But Evelyn saw it.
She had spent fourteen years learning every small sign of his fear.
The clenched jaw.
The lowered chin.
The way his right thumb rubbed against his wedding finger even when no ring was there.
Tonight, he was terrified.
Chloe looked between them.
“What records?”
Daniel snapped, “Enough.”
Evelyn stopped.
That one word landed hard.
For years, “enough” had been his favorite weapon.
Enough questions.
Enough drama.
Enough embarrassing me.
Enough making everything difficult.
Evelyn stared at him.
Then something inside her went still.
“No,” she said.
Daniel blinked.
“No?”
“You don’t get to say enough anymore.”
A few people murmured approval.
Daniel’s nostrils flared.
“This is my engagement party.”
Evelyn looked around again.
“In my ballroom.”
He stepped toward her.
“You’re doing this because you’re bitter.”
“Am I?”
“You can’t stand that I moved on.”
Chloe’s face twisted.
“Moved on? We started dating thirteen months ago!”
Daniel turned.
“Chloe—”
She slapped him.
Hard.
The sound cracked across the ballroom.
Several guests gasped.
Daniel stood frozen.
Chloe was breathing fast.
“You were still married.”
Daniel’s eyes darkened.
“Don’t ever hit me again.”
Something in his tone made Chloe step back.
Evelyn noticed.
So did Marcus.
Daniel quickly corrected himself.
“I mean… we’ll talk about this privately.”
“No,” Chloe said.
Her voice shook.
“We’re talking now.”
Daniel lowered his voice.
“Chloe.”
She stared at him.
“What else did you lie about?”
He hesitated.
That hesitation was all she needed.
She looked at the mansion.
“The house.”
Then at the diamond on her finger.
“The money.”
Then at Evelyn.
“The divorce.”
Her face slowly changed.
“What else?”
Evelyn reached into her silver clutch.
Daniel saw it.
His entire body stiffened.
“Evelyn.”
She pulled out a small black flash drive.
“Funny you should ask.”
Daniel took one step toward her.
Marcus immediately moved between them.
Evelyn lifted the drive.
“This contains every answer you’re looking for.”
May you like
Daniel’s face turned pale again.
Because one of those answers could send him to prison.
