Chapter 1 - THE WOMAN ON THE STAIRS

The champagne glass slipped out of someone’s hand before she even reached the bottom step.
It shattered across the marble floor.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Because the woman walking down the grand staircase was supposed to be gone.
Evelyn Cross descended slowly, one hand resting on the polished gold railing, her silver evening gown catching every crystal light in the ballroom. Diamonds glittered at her ears. Her dark hair was swept back, exposing a face that looked calm enough to be dangerous.
Three hundred guests stared at her.
Some recognized her.
Most didn’t.
But one man did.
Daniel Mercer.
The groom-to-be.
His face drained white.
Standing beside him, his twenty-six-year-old fiancée, Chloe Whitmore, turned sharply.
“Daniel?” she whispered. “Who is that?”
Daniel didn’t answer.
Evelyn took another step.
And another.
Every click of her heel sounded louder than the orchestra.
Chloe’s expression changed from confusion to irritation.
She marched across the ballroom, pushing past two servers.
“Excuse me!”
Evelyn stopped halfway down the final steps.
Chloe looked her up and down with open disgust.
“This is a private event.”
Evelyn gave a small smile.
“I know.”
“Then you know you weren’t invited.”
A few guests began whispering.
Daniel still hadn’t moved.
His hand tightened around his champagne flute.
Chloe glanced back at him.
“Daniel, do something.”
Evelyn looked at Daniel for the first time.
His jaw flexed.
“Evelyn,” he said quietly.
The room seemed to shrink.
Chloe turned back.
“You know her?”
Evelyn stepped onto the ballroom floor.
“You could say that.”
Chloe laughed nervously.
“Well, whoever you are, you need to leave.”
Evelyn’s smile disappeared.
“No.”
Chloe blinked.
“What did you say?”
“I said no.”
The young woman’s cheeks turned red.
“You don’t walk into my engagement gala dressed like some Hollywood widow and start making demands.”
Evelyn tilted her head.
“Your engagement gala?”
“Yes.”
“In this house?”
“Yes.”
Evelyn looked around.
At the imported Italian chandeliers.
At the seventeenth-century paintings.
At the marble columns.
At the ballroom Daniel once told her was too cold for dancing.
Then she looked back at Chloe.
“That’s interesting.”
Chloe stepped closer.
“You have ten seconds to leave before I have security drag you out.”
Evelyn didn’t even blink.
“Call them.”
Chloe stared at her.
“What?”
“Call security.”
Chloe snapped her fingers.
Two men in black suits started forward.
Daniel suddenly moved.
“Stop.”
Everyone turned.
Chloe frowned.
“Daniel?”
He swallowed.
“Don’t.”
Her eyes narrowed.
“Why not?”
Before Daniel could answer, a sharp burst of static came through the speakers.
At the far end of the room, gala host Marcus Reed stepped onto the stage with a microphone in his hand.
His expression was grim.
“Ladies and gentlemen,” Marcus said.
The whispers faded.
Daniel shut his eyes.
Marcus looked directly at Evelyn.
“I believe there has been a serious misunderstanding tonight.”
Chloe gave a frustrated laugh.
“You’re right. There has. This woman crashed our party.”
Marcus looked at her.
“No, Miss Whitmore.”
He raised the microphone.
“The woman you just threatened to throw out…”
Daniel whispered, “Marcus, don’t.”
Marcus ignored him.
“…is Evelyn Cross.”
A few older guests gasped.
Chloe stared blankly.
Marcus continued.
“Owner of Cross Holdings.”
More gasps.
“And sole legal owner of Cross Manor.”
Silence.
Marcus pointed around the room.
“This house.”
Chloe’s smile vanished.
Daniel opened his eyes.
Evelyn finally looked at him.
And this time, she didn’t smile.
May you like
Because the real reason she had come tonight was not to take back the mansion.
It was to destroy the lie Daniel had been hiding for three years.
