Chapter 9 - No More Quiet

Rosa canceled the transport before anyone reached our floor.

Then she called security.

Nora asked for the order to be preserved.

I held Owen and watched people finally stop treating Julian’s behavior as a family disagreement.

A supervisor arrived.

The hospital restricted visitor access.

A password went on my chart.

No one would receive information simply because they knew my name.

Rosa sat beside me.

“I’m sorry.”

“You stopped it.”

“It should never have reached that point.”

I looked at my son.

He was sleeping through the whole thing.

I wanted his life to remain that small and safe for one more hour.

Security found the request had come through an internal desk after a caller claimed to be Rosa.

The staff member who entered it had skipped verification.

There was no mysterious conspiracy.

Just a confident voice and a tired person making a dangerous assumption.

Julian had always been good at sounding like the person in charge.

This time, I would make him explain himself.

I called him.

Nora sat beside me taking notes.

“Your mother can visit,” I said.

Julian went quiet.

“When?”

“Tomorrow.”

“Then you’ve come to your senses.”

“I want to understand the trust.”

“It’s complicated.”

“Explain it.”

He sighed.

“Mother would manage Owen’s share.”

“Why?”

“Because you’re not qualified.”

“I investigated financial misconduct for a living.”

“You’re cleaning laundry now.”

The words landed exactly where he intended.

I let the silence stretch.

“What happens if an independent auditor reviews the fund?”

“Vivian.”

“Does Harbor Ridge have an actual office?”

“Don’t start.”

“Who owns it?”

His breathing changed.

Then he said, “You need to stop looking at things you don’t understand.”

“I understand the money came from patient grants.”

“You don’t know where it went.”

“Then tell me.”

He hung up.

Nora set down her pen.

“Useful.”

“Enough?”

“For the next questions.”

My phone chimed.

Julian had sent an email.

A proposed meeting.

A list of conditions.

And, by mistake, the message beneath the one intended for me.

He had forwarded the whole thread.

Eleanor had written:
