Chapter 11 - The Wife on the Paperwork

For a few minutes, I could not feel my fingers.

Six approvals.

My identification number.

My old professional title.

Julian had turned the one thing I trusted about myself into a weapon.

“I checked those accounts,” I whispered.

Nora waited.

“When we were married, he asked me to review quarterly summaries.”

“Did you approve transfers?”

“No.”

“Did you have access to the underlying records?”

“Not all of them.”

“What did he tell you?”

“That the outside accountant handled disbursements.”

The shame came fast.

I had been paid to notice deception.

At home, I had called it trust.

Nora leaned forward.

“Being deceived doesn’t mean you agreed.”

“But I should have known.”

“Eventually, you did.”

Owen stirred.

I picked him up before he cried.

His head fit beneath my chin.

I could not protect him by pretending I had never made a mistake.

I could protect him by facing it.

“Find the approval logs,” I said.

Nora called the investigator.

The summaries I had reviewed showed different totals from the transfer records.

My written notes questioned two unexplained expenses.

Julian had answered those questions by email.

I found the messages.

He had told me the entries were corrected.

They had not been.

That mattered.

It showed I had asked.

It showed he had lied.

Mrs. Jensen sent the hotel footage.

Mr. Alvarez sent his hallway camera recording.

It showed Eleanor entering my apartment with a maintenance key obtained after she claimed I had authorized her.

One lie could be dismissed.

The lies together formed a shape.

At noon, Gabriel stood in the doorway.

“I asked Julian if he would speak to me.”

“What did he say?”

“He told me I was trying to attach myself to a wealthy family.”

I winced.

“I’m sorry.”

Gabriel’s expression settled.

“You don’t need to apologize for him.”

That sentence loosened something inside me.

I had spent years translating Julian’s cruelty into stress, pressure, bad timing.

Someone had finally refused the translation.

Gabriel took out the photograph again.

“I’ll seek confirmation through the proper channels.”

“Even if he doesn’t want you?”

His eyes lowered.

“I need to know what happened.”

My phone rang.

Julian.

I let it go to voicemail.

His message arrived seconds later.

“You think that doctor can save you?”

A pause.

May you like

Then his voice turned cold.

“Tell him what happened to the last person who tried to audit my mother.”
