Chapter 10 - The Money Behind My Marriage

I read the email three times.

Then I stopped reading it as a wife.

I read it as an auditor.

The birth starts the review clock.

Not my divorce.

Not Robert’s death.

Owen’s birth.

I opened the estate documents and searched for the review provision.

There it was.

The medical fund and family trust shared an administrative company.

Robert had required an outside examination when distributions to a grandchild began.

A new beneficiary meant new scrutiny.

Owen had not created the missing money.

He had created a deadline.

Nora leaned over my shoulder.

“So they needed you to waive objections.”

“And let Eleanor manage everything.”

“Before anyone independent looked.”

I remembered the dinners I had hosted.

The charity auctions.

The speeches Eleanor gave about helping mothers who could not afford care.

I had stood beside her in borrowed jewelry.

Applauded.

Smiled for photographs.

While money meant for women like the one I had become disappeared.

Dr. Mercer read the provision later that morning.

“I knew Robert socially before Eleanor married him,” he said.

“Did you know about his estate?”

“No.”

“Why would he connect the two funds?”

Gabriel looked at the old agreement.

“Maybe he was worried.”

“About Eleanor?”

“Maybe.”

He refused to fill the gaps with a story that made him comfortable.

Nora’s investigator called.

We listened on speaker.

“Harbor Ridge’s filing lists Julian as the managing member.”

I stared at the wall.

My ex-husband had not simply followed orders.

He had owned the route the money took.

“The account activity you sent shows transfers into a property company,” the investigator continued.

“Do you recognize Alder House Holdings?”

“Yes.”

Julian had bought a lakeside house through it.

He had called it a business investment.

I remembered standing in its kitchen, touching the expensive marble.

Eleanor had said, “One day, the right woman will appreciate what this family built.”

I had thought she meant I did not belong.

Now I understood what they had built it with.

The investigator paused.

“There’s something else.”

Nora straightened.

“What?”

“The transfer authorizations contain Vivian’s approval.”

My throat closed.

“I never approved them.”

“Her employee identification number appears on all six.”

I looked at Julian’s email again.

He had not merely taken my money.

He had put my name on the money he stole.
