Chapter 8 - THE ROOM BEHIND THE WALL

The old Hale mansion had more secrets than rooms.
I knew that now.
Every hallway.
Every locked door.
Every forgotten corner.
It felt like the house itself had been waiting for someone to finally ask the right questions.
Clara led me downstairs.
To the oldest part of the mansion.
The area my father used for private meetings.
Nobody went there anymore.
"How do you know about this place?"
I asked.
Clara looked nervous.
"My mother told me."
"When?"
"Before she died."
I stopped walking.
"Your mother is dead?"
Clara nodded.
"She passed away when I was sixteen."
I felt guilty.
I had been so focused on my own pain that I never asked about hers.
"What did she tell you?"
Clara touched the old stone wall.
"She said the truth was hidden somewhere nobody would think to look."
I examined the wall.
Nothing.
Then I noticed something.
A small mark.
Almost invisible.
I pressed it.
A click echoed.
The wall moved.
Behind it was a hidden room.
For several seconds, neither of us moved.
Then I stepped inside.
The room was small.
Dust covered everything.
But there was one thing sitting in the center.
A wooden box.
With a name carved into it.
ROSE.
Clara covered her mouth.
I picked it up carefully.
Inside were documents.
Photos.
A journal.
And one envelope.
My name was written on it.
Bennett.
I opened it.
The first sentence made my chest tighten.
If you are reading this, it means Eleanor finally decided you deserved the truth.
I looked at Clara.
Then continued.
I need you to understand something. Your mother was not my enemy.
I stopped.
That wasn't what I expected.
The letter continued.
She was the only person who tried to help me.
My eyes moved faster.
Rose explained everything.
After she discovered she was pregnant, she told my father.
He wanted to be involved.
But Victor threatened him.
Victor controlled business accounts.
Investments.
Family secrets.
He threatened to destroy my father's entire empire.
Then came the sentence that made me angry.
Your father was weak. But your mother was brave.
I looked at Clara.
Her eyes were wet.
Rose continued.
Eleanor tried to protect me. She tried to protect my daughter. But she was fighting people who had more power than she did.
I sat down.
Everything I believed was changing.
My mother wasn't the villain.
My father wasn't the hero.
Everyone was human.
Everyone had failed.
Then I reached the final page.
And my entire body went cold.
Bennett, if Victor ever returns, do not trust him.
I looked up.
Clara saw my face.
"What?"
I handed her the letter.
She read the next line.
Her expression changed.
Victor was not trying to protect the family. He was trying to take it.
A noise came from outside.
We froze.
Someone was moving through the hallway.
Slowly.
Carefully.
I closed the box.
"Stay here."
Clara grabbed my arm.
"No."
I looked at her.
"I've spent my whole life hiding."
Her voice shook.
"But I'm done."
We stepped into the hallway together.
The lights flickered.
Nobody was there.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message.
A picture.
It showed us standing in the hidden room.
Taken moments earlier.
Below it was a sentence.
You should have left the past buried.
I looked at Clara.
Someone had been watching us.
Someone inside the house.
Someone close.
Then another message appeared.
Ask your mother who really saved your sister's life.
I felt my stomach drop.
My sister.
Not Clara.
The other sister.
The one nobody mentioned.
I looked at Clara.
She looked just as confused.
Because she didn't know either.
May you like
And that meant one thing.
There was another secret.
