Chapter 11 - THE TRUTH ABOUT ROSE REED

My mother finally told me everything.
Not the version the Hale family created.
Not the version hidden in business records.
The truth.
Twenty-eight years earlier, Rose Reed discovered something about my father's company.
Something dangerous.
The money that built the Hale empire wasn't as clean as everyone believed.
There were hidden accounts.
Illegal agreements.
People who disappeared after asking too many questions.
My father knew.
Victor knew.
And Rose found proof.
"She was going to expose everything," my mother said.
I looked at her.
"And my father stopped her?"
My mother shook her head.
"No."
That surprised me.
"Then who?"
She looked down.
"Victor."
I felt my hands tighten.
"Why didn't my father stop him?"
My mother looked broken.
"Because your father was weak."
That sentence hurt.
She continued.
"He thought he could control Victor."
"But he couldn't."
"No."
She looked toward the window.
"Nobody could."
I thought about the man who raised me.
The man who taught me strength.
The man whose name opened every door.
And suddenly I saw something different.
Power didn't always mean courage.
Sometimes powerful people were simply better at hiding fear.
Later that afternoon, I met Clara outside.
She was sitting on the steps.
Looking at the gardens.
"You knew all of this?"
She shook her head.
"Not everything."
"What did you know?"
She looked at me.
"My mother told me one thing before she died."
"What?"
"She said never trust a Hale man."
I looked down.
That hurt.
"Do you believe that?"
Clara was quiet.
Then she said:
"I didn't."
"Why?"
"Because she also told me something else."
"What?"
She smiled sadly.
"She said your mother was different."
I looked toward the mansion.
"She saved your life."
Clara nodded.
"She tried."
I sat beside her.
For the first time, there was no anger between us.
No suspicion.
Just two people connected by a family mistake.
"I spent my whole life thinking I was alone."
Clara looked at me.
"You weren't."
I smiled faintly.
"Neither were you."
A moment passed.
Then Clara's expression changed.
"Bennett."
"What?"
"There is something I never told you."
I looked at her.
"What?"
She reached into her bag.
Pulled out a small envelope.
Another one.
"You had this?"
She nodded.
"My mother gave it to me."
"Why didn't you show me?"
"Because I was scared."
"Of what?"
She looked directly at me.
"That it would prove your father wasn't just a liar."
My stomach tightened.
"What does it prove?"
She handed it over.
I opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
But this time...
it wasn't my father.
It was Victor.
Standing beside someone else.
Someone I recognized.
A person who had been helping him for years.
A person close to my family.
On the back of the photo was one sentence:
The person who betrayed Rose was never outside the family.
I looked at Clara.
"Who is this?"
Her face turned pale.
"Someone you know."
"Who?"
She whispered the name.
And my entire body went cold.
May you like
Because the person in the photograph...
was my mother.
