Chapter 13 - THE LIE THAT SAVED US

I stared at Victor.
For years, I had heard stories about him.
A ruthless businessman.
A man who disappeared when things became difficult.
A person my family refused to mention.
But standing there in that abandoned warehouse, I realized something.
The most dangerous people were not always the ones hiding in the shadows.
Sometimes...
they were the ones who knew exactly how to make you doubt the truth.
"My mother stopped my father from saving Rose?"
Victor nodded.
"You deserve to know what happened."
I stepped closer.
"Then tell me."
He smiled.
Finally.
The moment he had been waiting for.
"The night Rose disappeared, your father was going to leave Eleanor."
My heart tightened.
"What?"
"He was going to admit everything."
I stared at him.
"Why?"
"Because he wanted to bring Clara into his life."
I looked away.
Part of me wanted to believe that.
The father I remembered.
The man who taught me about loyalty.
The man who told me family came first.
Maybe he wasn't completely broken.
Maybe he made one terrible mistake.
Victor continued.
"But Eleanor found out."
My expression changed.
"And?"
"She gave him a choice."
I felt my stomach turn.
"What choice?"
Victor looked directly at me.
"Protect the Hale name..."
"Or lose everything."
Silence filled the warehouse.
I didn't know what to believe anymore.
My entire life was becoming a battlefield between two versions of the same story.
My mother.
Victor.
My father.
Everyone claimed they were protecting someone.
But someone always ended up hurt.
"Where is the proof?"
Victor smiled.
"Still looking for proof?"
He reached into his coat.
Pulled out a small recorder.
"I knew you would need this."
I didn't move.
"What is it?"
"Your father recorded a conversation the night Rose disappeared."
My heartbeat changed.
"Why didn't you show this before?"
Victor looked away.
"Because some truths are dangerous."
I almost laughed.
"Coming from you?"
He ignored me.
"Listen carefully."
He pressed play.
Static filled the room.
Then I heard a voice.
My father's voice.
"Bennett..."
I froze.
Not my name.
A recording.
But hearing his voice after all these years felt like opening a door I had locked forever.
Then another voice.
My mother's.
"You can't do this."
My father's voice sounded broken.
"I have to tell him."
"No."
"I can't keep lying."
A long silence.
Then my mother whispered:
"If you leave now, Victor will destroy everything."
My father answered:
"Let him."
My chest tightened.
Then my mother's voice changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
"You don't understand what he's capable of."
The recording ended.
I stood frozen.
Because one thing was clear.
My mother was not celebrating Rose's disappearance.
She was afraid.
But afraid of what?
Victor looked at me.
"Now you understand."
I looked at him.
"No."
His smile faded.
"I understand that everyone has been lying."
I turned toward the exit.
But before I left, Victor said:
"Ask your mother why your father never came home that night."
I stopped.
"What?"
Victor's voice became cold.
"Because he didn't disappear."
My heart sank.
"He was taken."
When I returned home, the mansion was surrounded by police.
My first thought was my mother.
I ran inside.
Clara was standing in the hallway.
Her face was pale.
"What happened?"
She looked at me.
"Your mother disappeared."
The world stopped.
"What?"
"She was taken from her room."
I looked upstairs.
The security team.
The cameras.
The locked doors.
Impossible.
Then Clara handed me something.
A note.
My hands shook as I opened it.
Only one sentence was written.
Now you know how Rose felt.
I looked at Clara.
And for the first time...
I understood.

This was never just about the past.
Someone was still trying to finish what they started twenty-eight years ago.
