CHAPTER 2 — THE SECRET CHRISTOPHER HID

The next morning, Christopher arrived at my house alone.
No Jessica.
No excuses.
Just my son standing on my porch looking like a stranger.
“Dad, we need to talk.”
I opened the door.
“Come in.”
He walked into the living room.
The same room where he had taken his first steps.
The same room where May had wrapped presents for him every Christmas.
And somehow, he looked uncomfortable.
Like he no longer belonged there.
“You’re destroying my marriage.”
I stared at him.
“No.”
“I’m stopping your wife from destroying your family.”
Christopher looked away.
Then he whispered:
“You don’t know everything.”
Those words caught my attention.
“What does that mean?”
He sat down.
For the first time in years, my son looked ashamed.
“Jessica has been struggling.”
“With what?”
He didn’t answer.
“Christopher.”
Finally, he spoke.
“She’s afraid.”
“Afraid of what?”
He swallowed.
“Losing everything.”
I almost laughed.
Because Jessica had spent years making everyone else afraid.
Then Christopher revealed something I never expected.
Jessica had been hiding massive debt.
Credit cards.
Loans.
Private spending.
Money that disappeared without explanation.
And worse…
She had convinced Christopher to cut ties with his sister Patricia.
Why?
Because Jessica believed Patricia was trying to take their inheritance.
“She told me your daughter was manipulating you.”
My hands tightened.
Patricia.
My daughter who flew across the country every year to help May.
My daughter who never asked for anything.
“She made you choose between your wife and your sister?”
Christopher looked down.
“Yes.”
“And you chose her.”
May you like
Silence.
That silence was my answer.
