Chapter 2 – The Capsule That Changed Everything

Kimberly slowly lifted both hands and stepped back.
"I was only trying to help him," she whispered, tears appearing almost instantly.
Michael ignored her.
He dropped to his knees beside his father, carefully reconnecting the oxygen tubing while dialing 911 with trembling fingers.
"Dad... stay with me."
His father gripped his wrist.
"Yellow... pill..."
"It's okay. I saw everything."
Those five words made Kimberly's face lose every trace of color.
Within minutes, paramedics rushed into the house.
As they examined the bright yellow capsule, one medic frowned.
"This isn't one of his prescribed medications."
The second paramedic carefully placed the capsule into an evidence bag.
"We're taking this to the hospital lab."
Kimberly forced a laugh.
"There must have been a mix-up."
Michael said nothing.
Instead, he reached into his pocket.
His phone.
He pressed play.
The living room filled with Kimberly's own voice.
"Swallow it, old man."
The room froze.
The paramedics looked from the phone...
...to Kimberly...
...then back to Michael.
One of them quietly stepped outside.
Seconds later, two police officers arrived.
Kimberly's confident smile finally disappeared.
At the hospital, doctors stabilized Michael's father after discovering that his blood pressure had crashed from stress and oxygen deprivation.
An hour later, the toxicology report arrived.
The yellow capsule wasn't heart medication.
It was a powerful sedative that could dangerously suppress breathing in elderly patients with heart disease.
The attending physician looked directly at Michael.
"If your father had swallowed this..."
He paused.
"...he probably wouldn't have survived the night."
Michael looked through the hospital window toward the parking lot.
Police officers were placing Kimberly into the back of a patrol car.

For the first time...
She looked genuinely afraid.
