My brother's wife, Kimberly, clamped one hand around my 72-year-old father's jaw and squeezed until his mouth snapped open.

"Swallow it, old man," she hissed.

She shoved a bright yellow capsule deep between his lips.

Dad gagged.

His frail hands tightened around the wheelchair's armrests as a violent cough tore through his chest.

The capsule shot back out, bouncing across the hardwood floor.

Kimberly's expression turned vicious.

Without a word, she seized the wheelchair handles and jerked them backward with all her strength.

The chair flipped.

My father crashed onto the floor.

His shoulder slammed into the baseboard.

His oxygen tubing ripped free from his face.

"You ungrateful burden," she spat, glaring down at him as he struggled for every breath. "I'm done taking care of you."

Dad reached weakly toward his chest.

"My heart..." he gasped. "That's... not my medicine."

"It is now."

She kicked the yellow capsule across the floor until it stopped inches from his face.

She thought no one was home.

She thought my brother was still at work.

She thought I was out buying groceries.

She had no idea I came home early.

And she definitely didn't know I'd installed a $30 hidden camera on the living room bookshelf the day before.

I stood motionless in the dark hallway, staring at the live feed on my phone.

Dad clutched his chest.

His breathing grew weaker.

Kimberly simply folded her arms, her designer heels clicking softly against the hardwood as she watched him suffer.

I didn't shout.

I didn't rush in.

I pressed Record.

Slipped the phone into my pocket.

Then I shoved the living room door wide open.

Kimberly whirled around.

The cruelty disappeared from her face in an instant, replaced by perfectly rehearsed panic.

"Oh my God, Michael!" she cried, dropping to her knees. "He just fell!"

My eyes moved to my father...

Pale.

Shaking.

Fighting for air.

Then to the bright yellow capsule lying beside Kimberly's heel.

May you like

Finally, I looked her straight in the eye.

"Step away from him."
