Chapter 8 - THE TRUTH MY MOTHER HID FROM ME

After Arthur was arrested, the world changed overnight.

News channels called it the biggest corporate scandal in decades.

The man everyone respected.

The advisor everyone trusted.

Was exposed as a criminal.

Fraud.

Blackmail.

Illegal medical manipulation.

Everything came out.

But one question kept haunting me.

Why did Arthur say my mother left me with him?

I found her sitting in my father’s old garden.

The same place where I used to play as a child.

She looked peaceful.

But I knew she was carrying something heavy.

“Mom.”

She looked up.

“You want answers.”

I sat beside her.

“I deserve them.”

She nodded.

“You do.”

For a moment, she said nothing.

Then she whispered:

“I didn’t leave you because I wanted to.”

“I know.”

“No, Vincent.”

She looked at me.

“You don’t know everything.”

My heart tightened.

She took a deep breath.

“When Arthur discovered I found his financial crimes, he gave me one choice.”

“What choice?”

“Disappear
 or watch you disappear.”

My fists clenched.

“He threatened me with you.”

She nodded.

“But I made a decision.”

“What?”

“I let him believe I gave up.”

I stared at her.

“You sacrificed yourself.”

“Yes.”

Her voice cracked.

“Because I knew if Arthur thought I was no longer a threat, he would protect you.”

I looked away.

For thirty years, I believed my mother abandoned me.

But she had been suffering because she loved me.

“Why didn’t Dad tell me?”

“He tried.”

She looked down.

“Arthur controlled every person around you.”

Then she reached into her pocket.

She pulled out a small necklace.

I immediately recognized it.

My childhood necklace.

The one I thought I lost.

“My mother gave this to me,” I whispered.

“She wanted you to have it.”

I opened it.

Inside was a tiny piece of paper.

One sentence.

Trust the person who loves you enough to lose everything.

My eyes filled with tears.

Then my phone rang.

A lawyer.

“Mr. Blackwood, you need to come to the company immediately.”

“Why?”

There was hesitation.

“Because Arthur wasn’t acting alone.”

I stood up.

“What?”

The lawyer lowered his voice.

“We found another account.”

My stomach dropped.

“Whose?”

A pause.

Then:

“Your family’s.”

I froze.

“That’s impossible.”

“It was opened thirty years ago.”

My mother stood up.

“Vincent
”

Her face turned pale.

“What?”

She whispered:

“That account was created by me.”

I stared at her.

“Why?”

She looked terrified.

“Because I was hiding something from you.”

The ground seemed to disappear beneath my feet.

There was still another secret.
