Chapter 9 - The Man Behind Mark

Mark was released pending further investigation because prosecutors were still building the larger case.

He immediately hired an expensive attorney.

Then he did something predictable.

He went public.

A local news outlet received an anonymous story claiming a “powerful Army colonel” had used military resources to destroy her civilian husband during a divorce.

My name wasn’t printed.

But enough details were included that people could identify me.

I refused interviews.

I followed protocol.

The Army opened the required review.

I cooperated completely.

Mark expected me to panic.

Instead, I waited.

Three days later, investigators identified the person funding Mark’s legal team.

Charles Voss.

Former Whitmore Aeronautics executive.

The same man named in my father’s notes fifteen years earlier.

General Hayes placed the photograph in front of me.

“You recognize him?”

“Yes.”

I remembered him from childhood.

Uncle Charlie.

That was what he had told me to call him.

He attended birthdays.

Christmas dinners.

My father’s funeral.

My stomach turned.

“He knew Mark?”

“For years.”

“How many?”

“At least six.”

Mark and I had been married for five.

The implication hit me immediately.

“Mark knew who I was before we met.”

Hayes nodded.

“We believe so.”

Everything inside me went cold.

Our first date.

Our engagement.

Our marriage.

Had any of it been real?

Then investigators recovered an email Mark had sent Charles Voss four days before proposing to me.

Only one sentence mattered.

Once I marry Anna, we’ll finally have access to what her father hid.

I stared at the screen until the words blurred.

Mark hadn’t stumbled into betrayal.

He had entered my life carrying it.
