Chapter 7 - He Walked Into the Wrong Boardroom

Mark arrived at Whitmore Aeronautics wearing a navy suit and the confidence of a man who still believed marriage gave him ownership over his wife.

He carried forged authorization documents.

He claimed I was medically incapacitated after childbirth.

He claimed he had authority to vote my shares.

He claimed I had appointed him my representative.

The board listened.

Then the conference-room doors opened.

I walked in.

Uniform pressed.

Colonel insignia visible.

David Mercer beside me.

General Hayes remained outside because this was a civilian corporate matter.

But two federal investigators were waiting downstairs.

Mark’s face collapsed.

“Anna?”

I took the empty chair across from him.

“Keep going.”

Nobody spoke.

I placed my folder on the table.

“You were explaining how I’m medically incapacitated.”

Mark recovered quickly.

“You shouldn’t be here.”

“I own the shares.”

“You just had a baby.”

“Yes.”

“You need rest.”

I smiled faintly.

“Interesting concern coming from the man who threw me out during labor.”

Several board members looked toward Mark.

His face reddened.

“This is personal.”

“No.”

David placed the forensic report on the table.

“This is criminal.”

Mark stood.

“We’re leaving.”

I didn’t move.

“Sit down.”

“You don’t command me.”

“No.”

I looked toward the glass doors.

“But they might have questions.”

Two federal agents entered.

Mark’s face went white.

One agent approached him.

“Mr. Whitmore, we’d like to speak with you regarding suspected financial fraud and unauthorized access to protected systems.”

Mark looked at me.

“You set me up.”

I almost couldn’t believe it.

“You forged documents and brought them into a corporate boardroom.”

He pointed at me.

“You hid everything!”

“My inheritance was legally restricted.”

“You made me look like a fool.”

“I didn’t have to.”

I held his gaze.

“You managed that yourself.”

The agents escorted him out.

But as he reached the door, Mark turned.

“Ask your grandfather why he really put those shares in your name.”

I frowned.

“What?”

He smiled.

For the first time that morning, he looked confident again.

May you like

“You still don’t know everything.”

Then he disappeared through the doors.
