Chapter 1 - The Salute That Changed Everything

For several seconds, nobody in the hospital room moved.

Mark stared at me as though someone had replaced his wife with a stranger.

The three-star general remained beside my bed.

The woman Mark had brought with him stood rigidly at attention.

And I sat there holding a sealed envelope from Army Headquarters while the monitor beside me quietly recorded my heartbeat.

Mark finally found his voice.

“Colonel?”

I looked at him.

“Yes.”

His face tightened.

“You’re a colonel?”

General Robert Hayes turned slightly toward him.

“You didn’t know?”

Mark opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

The woman beside him looked like she wanted the floor to swallow her.

I knew her now.

Major Claire Dawson.

Thirty-three years old.

Highly capable.

Recently assigned as executive officer to the classified command I was about to assume.

We had communicated through secure channels for weeks.

But because of operational restrictions, we had never met face-to-face.

Apparently, Claire hadn’t known what I looked like either.

Until now.

Her eyes moved from me to Mark.

Then back to me.

“Ma’am…”

Her voice was barely audible.

“I didn’t know.”

Mark snapped toward her.

“Don’t call her that.”

Claire looked at him.

“What?”

“She’s my wife.”

A strange silence followed.

Then Claire slowly removed her hand from Mark’s arm.

“No.”

Mark blinked.

“What do you mean, no?”

“You told me your divorce had been finalized six months ago.”

My eyes settled on Mark.

There it was.

The first crack.

Mark’s face changed.

“Claire, this isn’t the place.”

“You told me she moved overseas.”

General Hayes remained completely still.

But I noticed his jaw tighten.

Claire stared at Mark.

“You said you were single.”

“I said it was complicated.”

“No.”

Claire shook her head.

“You said divorced.”

I watched Mark carefully.

Suddenly, months of late nights made sense.

The missed appointments.

The unexplained weekends.

The constant irritation whenever I asked where he had been.

Mark noticed me watching him.

“Anna, don’t start.”

I almost laughed.

“Don’t start?”

“You don’t understand what happened.”

“I understand perfectly.”

A contraction tightened across my abdomen.

My hand instinctively moved toward my stomach.

General Hayes immediately stepped back.

“Colonel, you need rest.”

Mark stepped forward.

“We need to talk privately.”

“No.”

It was the first time I had ever said that word to him without hesitation.

Mark stopped.

I looked directly into his eyes.

“You threw me out while I was in labor.”

His face reddened.

“You were being dramatic.”

Claire stared at him.

“You did what?”

Mark ignored her.

“You hid your entire life from me, Anna.”

“My assignment was classified.”

“You could’ve told me something.”

“I told you everything I was legally permitted to tell you.”

“And the rank?”

I held his gaze.

“You never asked about my career.”

That silenced him.

Because it was true.

For years, whenever I tried talking about work, Mark changed the subject.

My achievements bored him.

My responsibilities annoyed him.

He had simply decided that because I didn’t brag about what I did, it couldn’t possibly matter.

General Hayes cleared his throat.

“There’s another matter, Colonel.”

He handed me a second envelope.

“This arrived through the legal liaison office.”

I recognized the law firm immediately.

Whitmore Family Trust.

My pulse quickened.

Mark noticed.

“What’s that?”

I opened it.

The first line was enough.

The trust transfer had been finalized.

Twenty million dollars.

Legally mine.

Effective that morning.

I slowly folded the document.

Mark stepped closer.

“What does it say?”

I looked at the man who had thrown my hospital bag across our floor less than twenty-four hours earlier.

“Nothing that concerns you anymore.”

His expression changed.

And for the first time, I saw something in his eyes that hadn’t been there before.

Fear.

Then my phone vibrated.

A message from the family attorney appeared.

URGENT: Mark attempted to access the Whitmore trust account this morning. Call me immediately.

I stared at the screen.

Mark had known.

May you like

Somehow…

Mark had known about the money.
