Chapter 3 - THE MAN IN MY HOUSE

I thought the worst thing I could discover was Vanessa hurting Lily.
I was wrong.
I searched the video archive.
Two weeks earlier.
Tuesday.
11:32 a.m.
A man walked through my front door.
Tall.
Gray jacket.
Baseball cap.
He didn’t knock.
He used a key.
I leaned closer to the screen.
“No.”
Vanessa stood behind me.
“Ryan—”
I turned.
“Who is that?”
She said nothing.
I knew him.
Daniel Mercer.
Our neighbor.
Our friend.
The man who had helped me carry furniture when we moved in.
The man who drank beer on my patio.
The man who had held Lily at her third birthday party and laughed when she smeared cake across his shirt.
I hit play.
Daniel entered the kitchen.
Vanessa kissed him.
Not a friendly kiss.
Not confusion.
Not misunderstanding.
A kiss between two people who had done it before.
My stomach twisted.
Lily watched from the couch.
She whispered, “Daddy?”
I shut the screen halfway.
“Don’t look.”
Vanessa stepped closer.
“It’s over.”
I laughed once.
It sounded ugly.
“It’s over?”
“Yes.”
“You’re cheating on me while abusing my daughter, and that’s your defense?”
“It wasn’t like that.”
“What exactly was it like?”
Vanessa started crying.
Real tears this time.
“I was lonely.”
“You were lonely?”
“You travel constantly!”
“I work.”
“You disappear for days.”
“So you brought another man into my house?”
“You weren’t here!”
Lily covered her ears.
I lowered my voice.
“Stop yelling.”
Vanessa pointed at me.
“You don’t get to judge everything. You checked out of this family years ago.”
I felt anger rising again, but I forced it down.
My daughter was watching.
I would not become another scary adult in the room.
I opened another file.
Daniel walked into the laundry hallway.
A minute later, Lily appeared.
Vanessa followed.
The hidden camera didn’t capture inside the laundry room.
Only the hallway.
Daniel looked down at Lily.
“What did I tell you?”
Lily backed away.
“I want Daddy.”
He grabbed her shoulder.
I stopped breathing.
Vanessa said something.
The camera microphone caught it.
“Just put her in there. She’ll stop.”
Daniel opened the laundry room door.
Lily screamed.
He pushed her inside.
Then Vanessa closed the door.
Daniel twisted something near the knob.
A lock.
Outside.
I paused the video.
My hands were shaking.
Vanessa whispered, “I never let him hurt her.”
I slowly looked at her.
“You let him lock her in a room.”
“She was safe.”
“She was terrified.”
“She screamed for hours!”
“That doesn’t mean—”
I stood up.
Vanessa stepped back.
“No.”
My voice came out cold.
“You don’t get to explain this anymore.”
I grabbed my phone.
“What are you doing?”
“Calling the police.”
Panic exploded across her face.
“Ryan, think about this.”
“I am.”
“You’ll destroy the family.”
“You already did.”
I dialed 911.
Vanessa rushed toward the door.
I moved between her and Lily.
The operator answered.
“911. What’s your emergency?”
I gave the address.
“My four-year-old daughter has been abused.”
Vanessa grabbed her purse.
“And I have video.”
She ran.
I followed her into the hallway.
“Vanessa!”
The front door slammed.
I reached the window.
She sprinted across our lawn.
But she wasn’t running toward her car.
May you like
She was running toward Daniel’s house.
And when Daniel opened his front door, he already had a bag in his hand.
