Chapter 12 - WHAT LILY DID

Caleb had been at the yellow house for four months.

His mother had entered rehab.

Charles convinced her he ran a temporary care program.

He lied.

When she tried to get Caleb back, Charles moved the child and changed phone numbers.

Caleb told police he met Lily twice.

The second time, Charles lost control.

“He was mad at me,” Caleb told investigators.

“Why?”

“I tried to run.”

Lily was sitting beside me when Karen explained it later.

I looked at my daughter.

“Sweetheart, what happened?”

Lily stared at her shoes.

“Mr. Charlie was yelling.”

“What did you do?”

“I pushed the red button.”

“What red button?”

“At the wall.”

Caleb explained that the house had an emergency alarm beside the back door.

Lily pressed it.

The siren scared Charles long enough for Caleb to get outside.

He didn’t escape far.

Daniel caught him.

But Charles blamed Lily.

“What did he do?” I asked.

Lily’s lip trembled.

“He put me in the dark room.”

I closed my eyes.

“How long?”

“I don’t know.”

My daughter had been carrying this by herself.

Four years old.

And she had still tried to help someone else.

I pulled her into my arms.

“You were brave.”

She shook her head.

“I was scared.”

“You can be scared and brave at the same time.”

She thought about that.

Then nodded.

Caleb gave police another detail.

Charles had a storage building near an old highway.

Daniel called it “the office.”

Detectives searched property records.

They found a warehouse leased under a fake company.

Police raided it that night.

Charles wasn’t there.

But they found records.

Names.

Dates.

Payments.

Photographs.

Dozens of families.

Some legitimate childcare clients.

Some not.

Melissa confessed quickly.

She claimed Charles controlled her since childhood.

She gave police addresses.

Bank accounts.

Fake identities.

Then she said something unexpected.

“Charles won’t run.”

Ramirez asked, “Why?”

“He hates losing.”

“What will he do?”

Melissa looked toward the interrogation camera.

“He’ll finish what he started.”

“What does that mean?”

She smiled sadly.

“He’ll go after Ryan.”

Police moved us to a secure location.

Not a hotel.

Not my house.

A private residence owned by the county.

Lily slept beside me.

For the first time in days, the night was quiet.

At 5:12 a.m., my phone buzzed.

A message.

Unknown number.

A photograph.

Vanessa lying in a hospital bed.

Below it:

YOUR WIFE TALKS TOO MUCH.

I called Ramirez.

“Charles found Vanessa.”

“No. She’s under guard.”

“Then who took this photo?”

Silence.

Thirty seconds later, Ramirez called back.

His voice was tight.

“Ryan.”

May you like

“What?”

“Vanessa’s gone.”
