Chapter 1 - THE SCREAM

“EAT IT!”

I heard my wife scream those two words before I even got my suitcase through the front door.

Then my four-year-old daughter screamed.

Not cried.

Screamed.

The kind of scream that makes a father stop breathing.

I had come home from Chicago a full day early. Vanessa wasn’t expecting me until Friday night. I had imagined surprising her, maybe picking up pizza, maybe waking Lily from her afternoon nap and watching her little face light up.

Instead, my suitcase slipped from my hand.

Because when I reached the kitchen, I saw Vanessa gripping Lily by the hair.

My daughter was on her knees.

A stainless-steel dog bowl sat on the floor in front of her.

“Vanessa!”

My voice hit the room like a gunshot.

She released Lily instantly.

Lily spun around.

Her face was soaked with tears.

Her knees were red from the tile.

“Daddy!”

She ran at me so hard I almost fell backward.

I caught her, lifted her against my chest, and felt her entire body shaking.

Vanessa stood frozen beside the kitchen island.

“Ryan, listen to me.”

I stared at her.

“Don’t.”

“This isn’t what it looks like.”

“I watched you drag my daughter across the floor.”

“She was having a tantrum.”

“She’s four years old!”

“You’re never here!” Vanessa snapped. “You don’t understand how difficult she gets.”

Lily buried her face against my neck.

“Daddy, please don’t go again.”

Everything inside me stopped.

I pulled her back gently.

“What did you say?”

She looked at Vanessa.

Then back at me.

“Please don’t leave me with Mommy.”

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Lily, stop.”

My daughter flinched so hard she nearly fell out of my arms.

That flinch scared me more than the screaming.

I moved Lily behind me.

Vanessa threw her hands up.

“Oh, come on. Now you’re making me look like some monster?”

“You don’t need my help.”

“Ryan—”

“No. Back up.”

She took another step.

Anger hit me before thought did.

I slapped her.

The sound cracked through the kitchen.

Vanessa stared at me, one hand against her cheek.

I immediately hated that I had lost control.

But I hated what I had seen more.

“You ever put your hands on her again,” I said, “you will never come near her.”

Vanessa’s eyes filled with fury.

“You hit me.”

“And you dragged a four-year-old child by her hair.”

Behind me, Lily whispered, “She does worse.”

I turned slowly.

“What?”

Vanessa’s face changed.

Lily looked at the floor.

“She does it every day.”

“Lily,” Vanessa said sharply.

I raised one hand.

“Do not speak to her.”

My daughter pointed toward the small security camera above the kitchen door.

“She turns that camera off.”

Vanessa went pale.

I looked at the camera.

Then at my wife.

She swallowed.

“You’re misunderstanding—”

“No,” I said.

I looked toward the smoke detector above the hallway entrance.

The one Vanessa thought was broken.

Because the kitchen camera wasn’t the only camera in the house.

And Vanessa had never known about the second one.

Her eyes followed mine.

For the first time, she looked afraid.

“Ryan,” she whispered. “What are you looking at?”

I didn’t answer.

May you like

I carried Lily toward my office.

And behind me, I heard Vanessa start running.
