Chapter 5 — Lily’s Testimony

Richard believed one thing.

A child’s words meant nothing.

He was wrong.

The court was silent when Lily entered.

She held her mother’s hand.

The judge looked at her gently.

“Lily, can you tell us what happened?”

The little girl looked nervous.

She looked at Richard.

Then at Evelyn.

And remembered the hallway.

The black cane.

The fear.

But she also remembered one thing.

Her mother needed her.

“He hurt my mommy.”

The courtroom went silent.

Richard shook his head.

“She’s just a child.”

The judge looked at him.

“A child who was brave enough to tell the truth when adults were too afraid.”

Those words destroyed Richard’s last defense.
