Chapter 9 - THE WRONG CAR

Ruiz called June at once. Two officers were sent to the precinct parking lot to bring her inside.

June had been driving Mara’s car that week while her own was in the shop. When Mara left for the hospital, they had switched back. It was a last-minute change, made after Mara found the memory card.

The truck driver had been given a license plate. Celeste had expected June to be behind the wheel.

“Why target June?” Dominic asked.

Mara looked toward the door, where the nurse had gone. “She has the complete records. I only had the part I could carry.”

Ruiz was already arranging protection for her.

A hospital worker brought Mara’s belongings in a sealed bag. Ruiz checked the coat’s collar and found a small slit in the lining. Inside was a memory card wrapped in plastic.

Mara asked to be there when Ruiz played it. Dr. Chen allowed a short visit with a portable screen.

The recording showed Celeste in an office with Peter Walsh. A calendar on the wall placed the meeting nine months earlier.

“You said nobody would get hurt,” Walsh told her.

“I said nobody had to.”

“I’m done moving money.”

Celeste slid a folder toward him. “Then your sister loses her house, and Dominic finds out you signed everything.”

“Dominic didn’t know?”

“He knows what he chooses to know.”

The image shook as Walsh adjusted whatever device he was using. Celeste leaned closer.

“Mara’s asking questions,” she said. “If she gets to him first, this gets ugly. So we make sure she leaves before she can.”

The video ended.

Dominic stood in the quiet room. Mara watched him.

“I thought you had signed off on the payments,” she said. “That was why I asked in the voicemail.”

“I know.”

“I didn’t find this recording until later. By then, Celeste had told me you didn’t want to hear from me.”

Ruiz’s phone buzzed. She read the message and went still.

“June’s safe,” she said. “The driver is talking. He says Celeste paid him to run the car off the road, but he insists she told him nobody would be seriously hurt.”

Mara let out a sharp, disbelieving breath. “At that speed?”

“He says there’s a second payment waiting for him.” Ruiz looked at Dominic. “It’s set to clear at noon from an account tied to your family company.”

“Freeze it.”

“We’re working on it.”

Dominic’s phone rang. This time Celeste did not hide her number.

He showed Ruiz the screen. She nodded for him to answer on speaker.

“Is Mara awake?” Celeste asked.

“Yes.”

“Good. Then ask her where she put the rest of the files.”

Ruiz motioned for him to keep her talking.

“What happens if I don’t?”

Celeste sighed. “The account clears at noon. Check whose name is attached to the transfer.”

Dominic looked at Ruiz.

The detective pulled up the account record on her tablet. Her face changed.

The money was going to a company registered in Mara’s name.
