Chapter 12 - THE EMPTY BASSINET

The NICU went into lockdown. Security checked every exit. Ruiz called in officers from nearby streets.

Dominic returned to the nursery and saw the empty bassinet. The blanket still held the small fold where his daughter had slept.

Mara arrived in a wheelchair with a nurse beside her. She had insisted on leaving her room as soon as she heard. Dominic expected anger. He would have accepted it.

Mara looked at the bassinet and gripped the arms of her chair.

“Find her,” she said.

“We will,” Ruiz promised.

The security cameras showed a woman in hospital scrubs pushing a covered medical cart out through a service corridor. A cap and mask hid her face. At the loading dock, she removed the cap.

Celeste.

Mara’s hand found Dominic’s. He held it while they watched Celeste lift their daughter from the cart and carry her into a gray sedan.

“Why take her?” Mara asked.

Price answered gently. “Because she thinks the files can keep her out of prison.”

“She can have every file,” Dominic said.

“She may ask for them,” Ruiz said. “Let us handle the contact.”

Celeste called six minutes later.

Dominic put the phone on speaker.

“She needs the machine she had at the hospital,” he said. “She’s premature.”

“I know,” Celeste replied. Her voice sounded strained.

“Bring her back.”

“I need the drive June has and Mara’s written statement. All copies.”

“You can’t get every copy back,” Mara said from beside him.

Celeste fell silent. “Mara.”

“Where is my daughter?”

“She’s safe.”

“She needs a nurse, Celeste.”

“I’m bringing one.”

Ruiz wrote a question on her pad and held it up for Dominic.

“How do we know she’s alive?” he asked.

For a few seconds, he heard only movement. Then a faint, furious cry came over the phone.

Mara bent forward, covering her mouth.

“You have one hour,” Celeste said. “Come to Pier Nine.”

The call ended.

Ruiz was already moving. “We’ll set up nearby. The baby comes first. Nobody makes a move that puts her at risk.”

Mara looked at Dominic. “You know the pier.”

“Yes.”

“Then tell them every way in.”

Dominic drew the layout from memory. He pointed out a maintenance gate, an office above the loading floor, and an old storage building at the water’s edge.

Price studied the drawing. “There’s a second road behind that building.”

“Celeste knows it,” Dominic said. “She used to take it when the main gate was crowded.”

Ruiz sent officers to cover the road.

As she headed out, Rafe called Dominic.

“I’m near Pier Nine,” he said. “A gray car just arrived. There’s another vehicle behind it.”

“What kind?”

“A black SUV.”

May you like

Dominic felt Mara tighten her hold on his hand.

Rafe lowered his voice. “Your father just got out.”
