Chapter 15 - WHAT THEY COULD KEEP

Mara gave the photograph to Ruiz the next morning.

Peter Walsh identified the man as a former employee of the security firm. He had helped Peter get away from Pier Nine months earlier, after Peter refused to approve another payment. The photograph was the only proof Peter had that the man was there.

Ruiz found him. His account helped confirm what Mara had spent months trying to prove: Celeste had kept the threats going to hide the money she was taking, and Vittorio had known enough to stop her long before he finally spoke up.

Dominic gave investigators the company records they requested. He stepped away from the shipping business while they examined the accounts. For once, he did not ask someone else to clean up a problem bearing his name.

Elena stayed in the NICU for five more weeks.

Dominic learned how to change a diaper around wires. Mara learned that she could fall asleep in a chair and wake at the smallest sound from her daughter. June brought coffee, clean clothes, and ordinary news from outside the hospital.

Some days, Mara and Dominic talked for hours. On other days, they sat quietly beside Elena. Mara told him about the first time she felt the baby move. Dominic told her about the night Elena held his finger. They had missed so much that they could only share it a little at a time.

On the morning Elena went home, Dominic arrived with an infant car seat and a look of fierce concentration.

Mara watched him check the straps for the third time. “The nurse already said you did it right.”

“She said it looked right.”

“She also pulled on every strap.”

“I can do that again.”

Mara laughed. He stopped and looked at her as though the sound were something precious.

They carried Elena out together. June met them at the car with a small knitted blanket. At the door, Mara paused beneath the bright morning sky.

“Are you coming to the apartment?” she asked Dominic.

“If you’d like me to.”

“Elena would.”

He waited.

Mara shifted the baby gently in her arms. “I would, too.”

Dominic opened the car door for them. Before Mara got in, he touched Elena’s tiny hand. She caught his finger with a grip he already knew.

Eight months earlier, he had watched Mara leave and had let silence stand between them. Now he had a daughter to care for and a wife beside him, willing to see whether they could rebuild what they had lost.

He looked at Mara. “Ready?”

May you like

She glanced down at Elena, then back at him.

“Yes,” she said. “Let’s take her home.”
