Chapter 10 - THE WOMAN WHO WATCHED

Her name was Claire Dawson.

She had worked at Blackwood Manor for nineteen years.

Housekeeper.

Scheduler.

Occasional nanny.

Keeper of keys.

Keeper of routines.

Keeper of silence.

Rebecca told police Claire had seen her lock Emily in the downstairs room.

More than once.

Claire had also cleaned Emily’s bruises.

She had changed stained clothing.

She had brought food downstairs.

And she had never told Daniel.

Police found Claire at her sister’s apartment.

She confessed within an hour.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Daniel asked later during a supervised interview.

Claire couldn’t look at him.

“Mr. Blackwood paid for my husband’s cancer treatment.”

Daniel stared at her.

“He saved his life.”

“So you sacrificed my daughter?”

Claire began crying.

“I thought Rebecca was only frightening her.”

“You saw bruises.”

“Yes.”

“You saw her locked downstairs.”

“Yes.”

“And you said nothing.”

Claire covered her face.

Daniel stood.

He couldn’t remain in the room.

Bennett followed him outside.

“This is how families like Richard’s survive.”

Daniel looked at her.

“People owe them.”

“Money.”

“Jobs.”

“Medical care.”

“Secrets.”

“And eventually everyone becomes afraid to be the first person who tells the truth.”

Daniel thought about Emily.

An eight-year-old had been braver than all of them.

That evening, Rebecca gave her formal statement.

She admitted locking Emily downstairs.

She admitted grabbing her.

She admitted threatening her.

She admitted taking her outside.

But she denied intentionally pushing Emily into the drainage channel.

“She ran from me.”

Rebecca cried.

“She slipped.”

Bennett asked why Rebecca didn’t help.

Rebecca’s answer destroyed any sympathy Daniel might have felt.

“I panicked.”

Emily had been injured.

Cold.

Terrified.

And Rebecca had walked away.

Then Rebecca admitted something else.

She had told Richard that Emily was becoming a problem.

Richard had ordered Vanessa to keep Daniel from asking questions.

He had not ordered Rebecca to hurt Emily.

He hadn’t needed to.

He had created a family where problems were hidden.

Rebecca had simply followed the rule she had learned her entire life.

Protect the family.

Whatever the cost.

Bennett asked one final question.

“Why did you run with Richard?”

Rebecca stared at the table.

“Because he told me he could make Emily disappear from the story.”

Daniel’s blood turned cold.

“What does that mean?”

May you like

Rebecca looked toward the camera.

“He said by morning everyone would believe Daniel hurt her.”
