Chapter 12 - VANESSA CHOOSES

The preliminary hearing began six weeks later.
Richard entered the courthouse through a crowd of cameras.
He wore a dark suit.
Perfect tie.
Calm expression.
He looked like a man arriving for a board meeting.
Rebecca entered through another door.
She had accepted a plea agreement requiring full cooperation.
Her attorney announced she would plead guilty to charges related to Emily.
Daniel felt no satisfaction.
Only exhaustion.
Then Vanessa arrived.
Her father’s attorney approached her immediately.
Daniel watched from across the hallway.
Richard had offered Vanessa protection.
Legal fees.
Money.
A new home.
Control of a trust.
All she had to do was say one thing.
Daniel had misunderstood what happened.
Vanessa listened.
Then she looked through the glass doors toward Daniel.
Emily wasn’t there.
Daniel had refused to expose her to the courthouse.
Vanessa turned back to the attorney.
“No.”
The attorney leaned closer.
Vanessa stepped away.
Then she walked into the courtroom.
When called to testify, she told the truth.
All of it.
The bruises.
The excuses.
The custody papers.
Her father’s pressure.
Rebecca’s instability.
Her own cowardice.
Richard stared at her throughout the testimony.
Finally his attorney asked for a recess.
As Vanessa stepped down, Richard spoke.
“You’re destroying your family.”
Vanessa stopped.
The courtroom went silent.
She turned toward him.
“No.”
Her voice shook.
“You taught us to destroy ourselves.”
Richard’s face hardened.
Vanessa continued.
“You taught us that your reputation mattered more than Noah.”
“More than Rebecca.”
“More than Emily.”
“More than me.”
The judge ordered her to stop speaking directly to the defendant.
Vanessa nodded.
Then she walked away.
Richard never looked at her again.
Outside the courtroom, Daniel waited.
Vanessa stopped several feet from him.
“I’m not asking you to forgive me.”
“Good.”
She nodded.
“I signed the custody agreement.”
Daniel said nothing.
“You have full custody.”
Still nothing.
“I asked the court for supervised visits only if Emily wants them.”
Daniel finally looked at her.
“That’s the first decision you’ve made about her that wasn’t about yourself.”
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“I know.”
She walked away.
Daniel watched her go.

For the first time, Vanessa had chosen Emily over the Blackwood family.
It was simply years too late to save her marriage.
