Chapter 8 - THE BLACKWOOD ARCHIVE

The proof was beneath the mansion.

Not behind the wine cellar.

Below it.

Police discovered a concealed steel door after examining architectural plans from the original construction.

Richard had built the room twenty-two years earlier.

It contained no wine.

It contained leverage.

Hundreds of files.

Executives.

Doctors.

Politicians.

Employees.

Family members.

Richard had spent decades collecting information that could destroy anyone who threatened him.

Detective Bennett called it an archive of fear.

One file carried Rebecca’s name.

Inside were photographs.

Medical reports.

Audio recordings.

And a video.

The video had been recorded beside the Blackwood pool ten years earlier.

Richard appeared on-screen.

Noah could be heard crying somewhere nearby.

Rebecca was leaving the property.

She stopped beside Richard.

“Promise me you’ll watch him.”

Richard looked irritated.

“I said I would.”

“I’ll only be gone two hours.”

“Go.”

Rebecca left.

Forty-seven minutes later, another camera showed Richard getting into his car.

Noah remained inside the house.

Alone.

Three hours later, Rebecca returned.

The rest was tragedy.

Daniel couldn’t watch it.

But Bennett did.

And it proved Rebecca had lied about many things.

This wasn’t one of them.

Richard had abandoned Noah.

Then he had forced Rebecca to accept public blame inside the family.

Because admitting the truth could have destroyed Blackwood Medical Systems during a major merger.

Vanessa watched the footage too.

Afterward, she vomited.

“My father told me she left him alone.”

Bennett looked at her.

“He lied.”

Vanessa began sobbing.

Daniel felt nothing.

Then Bennett opened another file.

EMILY MERCER.

Daniel stared at the label.

“Why does Richard have a file on my daughter?”

Inside were school reports.

Medical records.

Photographs.

Notes.

Copies of Daniel’s custody documents.

And reports written by a private investigator.

Richard had been preparing something.

A legal strategy.

If Daniel ever tried to remove Emily from Blackwood Manor, Richard planned to portray him as unstable and financially irresponsible.

Daniel read the final page.

His hands began shaking.

The plan had been updated eleven days earlier.

Eleven days.

Richard had known something was happening to Emily.

And instead of stopping it, he had prepared to take her away from Daniel if Daniel discovered the truth.

Then Bennett found the signature authorizing the plan.

It wasn’t Richard’s.

It was Vanessa’s.
