Chapter 3 - LILY’S ROOM

Rachel arrived twenty minutes later in snow boots and a coat thrown over her pajamas.

One look at the girls eating soup on the family room sofa, and her face tightened.

“I’m staying with them,” she told Nathan.

Vanessa stood near the fireplace. “Could you please tell your brother he’s overreacting?”

Rachel ignored her. She sat beside Grace and asked whether the soup was too hot.

Nathan went upstairs.

Lily’s bedroom was clean in the careful, empty way of a hotel room. Her dolls sat in a row. The blankets had been tucked so tightly beneath the mattress that a child would have struggled to pull them free.

He checked the dresser, then the closet. Nothing.

His phone rang. It was the pediatrician’s nurse, returning his call. Nathan explained what he had found and arranged for the girls to be examined that night. When he ended the call, he saw a thin white cord beneath the bed.

It ran to a phone taped to the frame.

The screen was dark, but it still had a charge. Nathan unlocked it with Lily’s birthday, the code he used on the girls’ old tablet.

There were videos.

The first showed the dining room four days earlier. The girls sat at the table while Vanessa’s voice came from behind the camera.

“You ate the crackers without asking. What happens now?”

“No dessert,” the girls answered.

“No dinner,” Vanessa corrected.

Nathan stopped the video. His hand shook too much to hold the phone steady.

The next clip showed Lily in her bedroom. Vanessa was at the door, telling her she could come down when she apologized for crying on a call with Nathan.

Lily, small beneath a blanket, said, “I wasn’t crying at Daddy.”

A third recording was only sound. Vanessa spoke to a man Nathan didn’t recognize.

“He signs whatever I put in front of him,” she said. “By January, the trust is handled.”

A man laughed. “And the kids?”

“They’ll be Rachel’s problem soon enough.”

Nathan heard a floorboard creak behind him.

Vanessa stood in the doorway. She looked at the phone, then at him.

“You went through my private things.”

“It was taped under Lily’s bed.”

“She stole it.”

Nathan backed toward the hall. “Don’t come closer.”

Vanessa’s expression hardened. “You should listen to the rest before you decide I’m the only one who lied.”
