Chapter 1 - THE PLATE

“Please don’t take our bread, Daddy. We’re still hungry.”

Nathan Caldwell stopped in the doorway.

He had come home early on Christmas Eve with four gifts in his hands. The music from Vanessa’s party still shook the floor behind him, but the family dining room was cold and nearly dark.

His daughters sat at the far end of the table.

Emma. Lily. Sophie. Grace.

Four five-year-old girls in thin nightgowns, their bare feet hanging above the tile. Between them sat one plastic plate. On it lay a few pieces of bread with green spots along the crust.

Nathan’s gift bags slipped from his hands.

All four girls flinched.

Sophie dropped beneath the table. Grace lowered her eyes. Emma pulled the plate closer as though Nathan might grab it.

He forced himself to kneel.

“Who gave you this?”

Emma’s lips trembled. “Mama Vanessa.”

“She said dinner would come after her guests left,” Lily added. “But they’re still here.”

Nathan looked at the glasses beside the plate. Ice had begun to form on the water.

“Where are your coats?”

“We’re not allowed to wear them inside,” Grace whispered. “They make the house look messy.”

Six months. He had been away for six months, calling from airports and sending money home. He had hired a chef, two nannies, a piano teacher. He had approved every expense Vanessa requested.

He had never asked to see the girls alone on a video call.

Nathan took off his coat and wrapped it around the nearest two. Then he lifted Sophie from beneath the table and held her until she stopped shaking.

“I’m going to get you something warm to eat,” he said.

Emma caught his sleeve.

“Daddy, please don’t tell her we told you.”

Nathan looked at her. “Why?”

Before Emma could answer, footsteps sounded in the hall.

Vanessa appeared in the doorway, diamonds at her throat and a champagne bottle in her hand. Her smile vanished when she saw the plate.

“Well,” she said. “Looks like someone ruined your surprise.”

Nathan stood between her and the girls.

“What happened to their dinner?”

Vanessa glanced at the bread. “Ask your daughters. They’ve gotten very good at telling stories.”

Behind Nathan, Grace whispered something so quietly he almost missed it.

“Don’t let her take Lily upstairs again.”
