Chapter 2 - WHAT THE CAMERA SAW

The recording began at 2:14 p.m.

Lily was sitting on the living room rug with crayons scattered around her.

She looked happy.

Normal.

Vivian entered.

Even through the silent security footage, Ethan could see the change in Lily immediately.

Her shoulders pulled inward.

Her smile disappeared.

Vivian pointed toward the floor.

Lily began gathering the crayons.

One rolled underneath the sofa.

Lily crawled after it.

Vivian grabbed her arm and yanked her upright.

Ethan’s breathing stopped.

“No.”

Beside him, Vivian said, “You don’t understand.”

He kept watching.

The recording had audio.

Vivian’s voice came through the speaker.

“How many times do I have to tell you?”

“I’m sorry.”

“Sorry doesn’t fix stupid.”

Ethan’s face hardened.

On screen, Lily began crying.

Vivian walked toward the fireplace.

She picked up the decorative chain.

Ethan’s stomach turned.

Vivian dragged it behind her as she walked toward Lily.

The metal scraped loudly against the marble.

Lily backed away.

“Please don’t.”

Vivian smiled.

“Bad girls learn fear.”

Ethan stopped the recording.

Silence swallowed the room.

His hand remained on the control panel.

Lily was still holding his neck.

He could feel her heartbeat racing against him.

Vivian spoke first.

“She has behavioral issues.”

Ethan slowly turned.

“My daughter is four.”

“She manipulates you.”

“She’s four.”

“She screams. She lies. She destroys things. You’re never here, Ethan. You have no idea what I deal with.”

He stared at her.

“You threatened her with a chain.”

“I never hit her with it.”

Ethan’s expression changed.

Vivian realized her mistake.

He repeated quietly, “You never hit her with it.”

“That isn’t what I meant.”

“So there are other things you did hit her with?”

“No!”

Lily buried her face deeper against Ethan.

He felt rage rise through him.

Not explosive rage.

Something worse.

Cold rage.

Controlled rage.

The kind that remembered every word.

Every detail.

Every excuse.

Ethan pulled out his phone.

Vivian’s eyes widened.

“Who are you calling?”

“Police.”

She laughed.

“You can’t be serious.”

He dialed.

Vivian grabbed his wrist.

Ethan looked down at her hand.

“Take your hand off me.”

“Ethan, think.”

“I am thinking.”

“You’re going to destroy our family.”

He pulled free.

“No, Vivian. I think you already did that.”

Lily suddenly whispered something into his ear.

So quietly he almost missed it.

“There’s another room.”

Ethan stopped dialing.

He looked at her.

“What room, baby?”

Lily pointed toward the back hallway.

Vivian went completely still.

Ethan noticed.

His stomach dropped.

“What room?”

Lily’s little hand shook as she pointed.

“The dark one.”

Vivian spoke sharply.

“She doesn’t know what she’s talking about.”

Lily began crying again.

“Yes, I do!”

Ethan’s eyes stayed on Vivian.

Then he carried Lily toward the hallway.

Vivian moved in front of him.

“You are not going back there.”

He stared at her.

“Move.”

“No.”

“Move.”

Something in his voice finally made her step aside.

Ethan walked down the hallway.

Past the guest bathroom.

Past the laundry room.

Past the wine cellar.

Then Lily pointed toward a narrow door beside the pantry.

A door Ethan had assumed led to storage.

There was a new lock on it.

A lock he had never installed.

Ethan touched it.

Then looked back at Vivian.

“Where’s the key?”

She said nothing.

Lily whispered against his shoulder.

“She keeps it around her neck.”

May you like

Ethan looked down.

Vivian’s gold necklace was gone.
