Chapter 10 - THE PASSPORT

Ethan almost dropped the phone.

“She had Lily’s passport?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“We believe it was taken from your home safe.”

Ethan’s stomach turned.

The safe had also contained Sarah’s jewelry.

Business documents.

Passports.

Emergency cash.

Vivian knew the combination.

“Why would she take Lily’s passport?”

Detective Chen didn’t answer.

She didn’t need to.

Ethan did.

“No.”

“Ethan—”

“She was planning to take her.”

“We don’t know that yet.”

“Why else would she have Lily’s passport in a suitcase at an airfield?”

Chen stayed silent.

Ethan’s hands shook.

He looked toward Lily, who was playing quietly with crayons.

He imagined coming home one day and finding her gone.

A note.

A lie.

A flight to another country.

Vivian controlling the story.

Vivian telling Lily her father didn’t want her.

The thought made him physically sick.

“Find her.”

“We’re working on it.”

Vivian was arrested that afternoon.

She had been hiding in a maintenance building near the private airfield, apparently waiting for someone.

That someone never arrived.

The news should have relieved Ethan.

It didn’t.

Because Detective Chen called again.

“We found another phone in her bag.”

“A burner?”

“Yes.”

“And?”

“There are messages with someone saved as M.”

“Mason.”

“That’s our assumption.”

Vivian’s brother.

Messages stretched back months.

Move the trust first.

Get his signature while he’s distracted.

The kid is becoming a problem.

Use what worked before.

Ethan read that last line three times.

“What worked before.”

He looked at Chen.

“That’s about Noah.”

“Possibly.”

Another message:

If she keeps talking, make Ethan think she’s unstable.

Another:

Once the papers are done, we can leave.

Another:

Keep her sleepy when he travels.

Ethan stood so fast his chair hit the wall.

Chen didn’t stop him.

He paced the room.

“She was drugging Lily to keep her quiet.”

“It appears so.”

“She was setting up a story that Lily was unstable.”

“Yes.”

“So if Lily told me anything—”

“You might have been less likely to believe her.”

Ethan closed his eyes.

Vivian had been building a cage around his daughter.

Not just a physical one.

A story.

A version of reality where Lily was difficult.

Dishonest.

Unstable.

Manipulative.

And Ethan had already started believing parts of it.

He remembered scolding Lily two weeks earlier.

“Vivian says you’ve been lying.”

Lily had cried.

“I don’t lie.”

He had said, “Then tell the truth.”

Now the memory crushed him.

Detective Chen spoke gently.

“Ethan.”

He opened his eyes.

“There’s something you need to understand.”

“What?”

“People who control others often build credibility before the victim ever speaks.”

He swallowed.

“She built hers.”

“Yes.”

“And I helped her.”

Chen shook her head.

“You didn’t know the whole picture.”

“But Lily tried.”

“Now you know.”

That mattered.

But it didn’t erase anything.

Later that afternoon, Michael arrived with news.

“Mason Price has been detained.”

Ethan looked up.

“Where?”

“Airport.”

“Trying to leave?”

“With cash.”

“How much?”

“Nearly three hundred thousand.”

Ethan gave a bitter laugh.

“Of course.”

“There’s more.”

Ethan rubbed his forehead.

“There’s always more.”

Michael placed a folder on the table.

“We traced one of the LLC transfers.”

“To what?”

“A property.”

“Where?”

“Arizona.”

Michael opened the file.

A house.

Purchased four months earlier.

Paid mostly in cash.

Owner: a shell company linked to Vivian.

Ethan stared at the photograph.

“Why Arizona?”

“We don’t know.”

Then Detective Chen entered.

She had another document.

“I may.”

Ethan looked at her.

Chen placed a school enrollment form on the table.

It was for a private preschool in Scottsdale.

Student name:

LILY COLE.

Guardian:

VIVIAN COLE.
