Chapter 13 - THE FINAL LIE

Mason’s statement transformed the investigation.

Vivian had prepared emails.

Fake messages.

Edited screenshots.

Documents designed to make Ethan appear angry, unstable, and controlling.

If Lily disappeared, Vivian intended to claim she had fled to protect the child from him.

Detective Chen showed Ethan one fake text.

YOU WILL NEVER TAKE LILY FROM ME.

It looked as though Ethan had sent it.

He hadn’t.

Another:

IF YOU TRY TO LEAVE, YOU’LL REGRET IT.

Fake.

Another:

LILY BELONGS TO ME.

Fake.

Ethan stared at the screen.

“She created an entire version of me.”

“Yes.”

“One that never existed.”

Chen nodded.

“That’s the idea.”

He understood now how close he had come to losing everything.

Not only money.

Not only a marriage.

His daughter.

His reputation.

Possibly his freedom.

All because he had trusted the wrong person.

The prosecutor filed multiple charges.

Child abuse.

Child endangerment.

Unlawful administration of medication.

Forgery.

Fraud.

Identity theft.

Conspiracy.

Attempted custodial interference.

More charges were possible.

Vivian’s attorney immediately began negotiating.

But Vivian refused to admit anything.

“She still says Lily is lying?” Ethan asked.

Michael nodded.

“And Noah?”

“She says he was coached.”

“The cameras?”

“Misinterpreted.”

“The medication?”

“Accidental.”

“The dark room?”

“A game.”

Ethan laughed bitterly.

“Of course.”

Then came the preliminary hearing.

Ethan dreaded it.

He didn’t want Lily anywhere near the courthouse.

She stayed home with Rosa and Dr. Pierce.

Ethan sat behind prosecutors.

Vivian entered wearing a gray suit.

Hair perfect.

Expression calm.

For one strange second, she looked exactly like the woman he had married.

The woman who smiled at his jokes.

The woman who kissed Lily goodnight in front of him.

The woman who had promised at their wedding reception:

“I will love Lily like she’s my own.”

Vivian looked at Ethan.

She smiled.

His stomach twisted.

During a break, deputies escorted her past him.

She slowed.

“You still think you’re the hero?”

Ethan stared at her.

“I don’t think that at all.”

Her smile faded slightly.

“I should’ve seen it sooner.”

That wasn’t the answer she expected.

“You were never there,” Vivian whispered.

“I know.”

She smiled again.

“Then this is your fault too.”

The words landed exactly where she wanted them to.

For weeks, Ethan had already been saying the same thing to himself.

I should have known.

I should have been home.

I should have listened.

Vivian saw the hesitation in his face.

Her eyes brightened.

She leaned closer.

“Lily needed you.”

Ethan closed his eyes.

Then he remembered something Dr. Pierce had told him.

Guilt can help you change.

But manipulators use guilt to keep you trapped.

He opened his eyes.

“Yes.”

Vivian looked surprised.

“She did need me.”

He stepped closer.

“And I’m there now.”

Her smile disappeared.

“You don’t get to use my mistakes to excuse what you did.”

A deputy told Vivian to keep moving.

As she walked away, Ethan felt something inside him loosen.

Not disappear.

But loosen.

Later that day, prosecutors played Noah’s recording in court.

For the first time, Vivian lost control.

“That’s edited!”

Her lawyer grabbed her arm.

“Vivian.”

“That is not what happened!”

The judge ordered silence.

Then the security footage played.

Lily crawling backward.

Vivian dragging the chain.

Bad girls learn fear.

The courtroom was silent.

Vivian stopped smiling.

The judge denied her request for release.

She would remain in custody until trial.

Outside, reporters crowded the steps.

Ethan ignored them.

He only wanted to go home.

Then Michael caught his arm.

“We have a problem.”

Ethan turned.

“What now?”

Michael handed him his phone.

A news site had already published part of the case.

The headline was brutal.

MILLIONAIRE FATHER IGNORED SIGNS OF CHILD ABUSE FOR MONTHS.

Ethan read it.

Then another message arrived.

And another.

And another.

By the time he reached the car, his phone was exploding.

Someone had leaked private details.

May you like

And the internet had chosen its next target.

Him.
