Chapter 8 - NATHAN’S CONFESSION

Nathan held the gun low, but his eyes never left David.

Lily stepped in front of the monitor.

Nathan’s face was bruised, and blood stained one side of his coat.

“You’re alive,” David said.

“Barely.”

“Where’s Vanessa?”

“Running.”

“Did you hurt Emily?”

Nathan’s jaw tightened.

“I didn’t kill her.”

“You were in the garage.”

“I followed her there.”

“You attacked her.”

“I was trying to protect her.”

David laughed bitterly.

“You planted the device beneath my car.”

Nathan looked at the floor.

“Yes.”

Lily screamed.

“You killed my sister!”

“No. The device was removed before David drove the car.”

David froze.

“What?”

Nathan lowered the gun.

“Vanessa wanted you dead. I wanted the money. We made a deal. I sabotaged the brakes, but Emily discovered it before you drove away.”

“Then what happened?”

“Vanessa ordered someone else to finish the job.”

“Who?”

Nathan looked at Lily.

“Your sister’s husband.”

Lily staggered backward.

“Emily was never married.”

“Not legally. He used another name.”

David stared at the footage.

“Why didn’t you tell anyone?”

“Because I was afraid.”

“You helped them steal twelve million dollars.”

“I was afraid of Vanessa.”

Nathan placed the gun on the desk.

“I recorded everything because I knew she would eventually betray me.”

David stepped toward him.

“Where is Emily?”

Nathan swallowed.

“She’s alive.”

Lily stopped breathing.

“What did you say?”

“She survived the accident. Vanessa paid a private clinic to hide her.”

“Where?”

Nathan pulled a folded card from his pocket.

“Saint Vincent Rehabilitation Center.”

Lily grabbed it.

“Why would Vanessa hide her?”

“Because Emily woke up.”

David’s voice became quiet.

“What did she remember?”

Nathan looked at the monitor.

“She remembered who was sitting in the passenger seat when the car went over the bridge.”

David’s heart pounded.

“Who?”

Nathan’s expression changed.

“Not Vanessa.”

Before he could continue, the passage door slammed shut.

The room began filling with smoke.

Lily coughed.

Nathan rushed toward the door.

David grabbed the emergency handle, but it wouldn’t move.

A voice came through the hidden speaker.
