Chapter 6 - LILY’S SECRET

The house fell into darkness.

Someone screamed downstairs.

David grabbed Lily’s hand.

“Stay with me.”

A loud crash came from the west wing.

Then another.

Boxes hit the floor.

David pulled out his phone and turned on the flashlight.

Vanessa had disappeared.

“Where did she go?” Lily asked.

David scanned the room.

The back window stood open.

Rain blew across the files.

“She escaped through the window.”

“No,” Lily whispered.

“What?”

“She didn’t escape.”

A figure moved behind the curtain.

David turned quickly, but there was no one there.

He hurried to the window.

Below, the garden gate swung open.

A car sped away into the darkness.

Police officers entered through the front door seconds later.

David gave them Vanessa’s description and showed them the financial records.

But when he returned to the west wing, the folder was gone.

Only one photograph remained on the floor.

It showed Lily standing beside a younger woman.

The woman had the same eyes as Lily.

David picked it up.

“Who is she?”

Lily took a step back.

“My sister.”

“What does she have to do with Vanessa?”

Lily’s lips trembled.

“Her name was Emily.”

“Was?”

“She died six months ago.”

David looked at the photograph.

“How?”

“Car accident.”

His eyes narrowed.

“What kind of accident?”

“Brake failure.”

The room seemed to tighten around them.

Lily wiped her tears.

“Emily worked for Vanessa before me. She discovered the money transfers. She tried to report them.”

“And Vanessa stopped her?”

“I don’t know.”

“You came here for revenge.”

“No.”

“Then why did you take this job?”

Lily stared at him.

“Because Emily left me a message before she died.”

“What message?”

Lily reached into her uniform pocket and pulled out a small silver key.

“She said, ‘If anything happens to me, find David Blackwood. He’s the only person who can expose them.’”

David looked at the key.

“What does it open?”

Lily shook her head.

“I never found out.”

A police officer called from the hallway.

“Mr. Blackwood, we found something.”

David and Lily followed him downstairs.

On the marble floor lay a bloodstained glove.

It belonged to Nathan Reed.

CLIFFHANGER: Inside the glove was a note addressed to Lily: “Your sister didn’t die in an accident.”
