CHAPTER 3 — THE FAMILY HE ALMOST LOST

Six months later…

Chicago still feared Adrian Moretti.

The newspapers still called him dangerous.

His enemies still whispered his name.

But inside our home…

He was different.

He woke up every night when our daughter cried.

He learned how to warm bottles.

He changed diapers while wearing expensive suits.

And every morning, he kissed my forehead before leaving.

Not because he had to.

Because he wanted to.

The war with Vincent Russo ended quietly.

No headlines.

No public violence.

Just Adrian protecting what mattered most.

When I finally asked him how it ended, he simply said:

“I chose you.”

Years ago, I would have believed that meant choosing me over someone else.

But now I understood.

He chose a different life.

A better one.

One evening, I found him sitting in the nursery.

Our daughter was asleep against his chest.

The most feared man in Chicago looked completely peaceful.

“You know,” I said softly, “I used to think you didn’t need anyone.”

Adrian looked at me.

“I didn’t.”

A pause.

“Until I lost you.”

I sat beside him.

“You hurt me.”

“I know.”

“You made me feel like I wasn’t important.”

His eyes lowered.

“I know.”

“And I don’t know if I’ll ever forget that.”

Adrian nodded.

“I don’t want you to forget.”

I looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because if you forget the pain, I might forget how badly I failed you.”

Those words stayed with me.

Because forgiveness was never about pretending nothing happened.

It was about seeing someone change.

And Adrian Moretti had changed.

Not because he lost power.

But because he finally understood what power could never give him.

Love.

A year after our daughter was born, Adrian took me back to the same Chicago clinic where we first saw each other again.

The same waiting room.

The same Lake Michigan painting.

He held our daughter’s hand.

And he held mine.

“I brought you here because this is where I almost lost everything.”

I smiled.

“But you didn’t.”

He looked at me.

“No.”

A soft smile appeared.

“I found everything.”

Our daughter laughed between us.

And for the first time in years…

Adrian Moretti was not feared.

Not hunted.

Not alone.

He was simply a husband.

A father.

May you like

A man who finally understood that the greatest thing he could protect…

Was the family he almost walked away from.
