CHAPTER 2 — THE WAR BEHIND THE SILENCE

The next morning, Adrian was still there.
I expected him to leave after the danger passed.
He didn’t.
He sat in the hospital chair wearing the same black suit from yesterday.
Like he had been afraid that if he closed his eyes, he would lose another moment with his daughter.
But peace never lasted in Adrian Moretti’s world.
At 8:15 a.m., his security chief entered the room.
“Boss.”
One word.
But Adrian immediately knew something was wrong.
I watched his expression change.
The husband disappeared.
The mafia leader returned.
“What happened?”
The security chief lowered his voice.
“Vincent Russo knows about the baby.”
My blood went cold.
Adrian noticed.
His hand immediately covered mine.
“No.”
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
“You don’t scare her.”
The security chief nodded.
But I knew.
Something dangerous had entered the room without walking through the door.
“Who is Vincent Russo?” I asked.
Adrian hesitated.
Then answered honestly.
“The man who wants everything I have.”
“And now he wants our daughter?”
His silence confirmed it.
Fear moved through me.
Not for myself.
For the little life inside me.
Adrian saw it.
And something changed.
“I’m ending this.”
I looked at him.
“You mean revenge.”
“No.”
His eyes locked with mine.
“I mean protecting my family.”
The word hit me.
Family.
Six months ago, he erased that word from our lives.
Now he said it like it was the only thing keeping him alive.
That evening, Adrian made a decision I never expected.
He moved his entire security operation away from his criminal empire.
He appointed someone else to handle business.
And when I asked why…
He answered simply.
“Because my daughter deserves a father who comes home.”
For the first time, I saw the man beneath the reputation.
Not Adrian Moretti, the feared mafia boss.
Just Adrian.
The man who had lost his way.
The man who was trying to find his way back.
Three days later, our daughter decided she was ready to meet the world.
The delivery room was filled with doctors.
Monitors.
Movement.
But Adrian only looked at me.
“You’re doing amazing.”
I smiled weakly.
“You sound surprised.”
His eyes softened.
“No.”
A pause.
“I’m amazed.”
Then our daughter was born.
A tiny cry filled the room.
Adrian froze.
The same man who never feared anything…
Cried.
The doctor placed the baby in my arms.
Adrian reached forward.
But stopped.
“May I?”
I smiled through my tears.
“You still ask.”
“Because now I know I should.”
I placed our daughter into his arms.
He looked down at her.
A powerful man holding the smallest thing he had ever loved.
“She’s perfect.”
I whispered:
“She has your eyes.”
Adrian looked at me.
“No.”
May you like
A small smile appeared.
“She has your heart.”
