CHAPTER 1 — THE HEARTBEAT THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

The emergency button clicked.

For three seconds, nobody moved.

Adrian Moretti, a man who had stared down enemies with a gun pointed at his chest, suddenly looked terrified.

Not because of danger.

Because of uncertainty.

“What happened?” he asked.

His voice was low, controlled, but I saw the fear underneath.

Dr. Rebecca Sloan didn’t answer immediately. She continued studying the ultrasound screen, moving the device carefully across my stomach.

“Everyone stays calm,” she finally said.

Those words made my heart race.

Because doctors only said that when something was wrong.

Adrian immediately stepped closer.

“What do you mean?”

Dr. Sloan looked at him.

“Mr. Moretti, I need you to understand something. Your daughter is moving, but her heart rate briefly dropped.”

Adrian’s face changed.

“My daughter?”

The words came out like he was still learning how to say them.

Dr. Sloan nodded.

“We need additional monitoring. It doesn’t mean something terrible is happening, but we need to be careful.”

I expected Adrian to demand answers.

To call his private doctors.

To take control.

That was who Adrian Moretti was.

But instead…

He looked at me.

Not the doctor.

Not his security team.

Me.

“Are you scared?”

The question surprised me.

I almost laughed.

“Adrian, I spent six months carrying your child while believing you wanted nothing to do with me.”

His expression tightened.

“I never wanted that.”

“But you signed the papers.”

Silence.

The truth was heavier than any argument.

Six months ago, Adrian had walked away from our marriage.

He told me loving him put me in danger.

He told me his world was too violent for someone like me.

But he never told me he still loved me.

He just disappeared.

And I had spent months convincing myself I hated him.

Until now.

Until I saw him kneeling beside me.

Until I saw fear in the eyes of a man everyone else feared.

The nurse returned with instructions.

“We need to move her to the observation room.”

Adrian immediately reached for my wheelchair.

I stopped him.

“You don’t have to pretend.”

His eyes met mine.

“Pretend what?”

“That you care.”

Something in his face broke.

“Elena.”

His voice softened.

“I made a thousand mistakes.”

A pause.

“But not loving you.”

For the first time in months, I had no answer.

Hours later, Adrian sat beside my hospital bed.

Not as a mafia boss.

Not as a powerful man.

Just as the father of my unborn daughter.

He didn’t make calls.

He didn’t give orders.

He simply watched the monitor showing our baby’s heartbeat.

Slow.

Steady.

Alive.

“You stayed,” I whispered.

He looked at me.

“I should have stayed before.”

The honesty hurt more than an excuse.

“Why did you really divorce me?”

His jaw tightened.

For a moment, I thought he wouldn’t answer.

Then he spoke.

“Because someone threatened you.”

I froze.

“What?”

Adrian looked at the floor.

“Six months ago, I discovered someone inside my organization was using you to get to me.”

My anger faded.

“They threatened me?”

“Yes.”

“And you thought leaving me would protect me?”

His silence answered.

I stared at him.

“You destroyed our marriage to save me?”

“I thought if you hated me, you would stay away.”

My eyes burned.

“You should have trusted me enough to tell me.”

“I know.”

The feared Adrian Moretti whispered those two words.

“I know.”

Then the heart monitor changed.

A tiny movement appeared.

Adrian looked up.

Our daughter kicked again.

May you like

And this time…

I saw tears forming in his eyes.
