Chapter 8 - THE SECRET IN THE OLD HOUSE

The Sterling family mansion had always represented power.
A massive estate outside New York.
Beautiful gardens.
Marble floors.
Rooms filled with expensive artwork.
For years, Alexander believed it was a symbol of everything his family built.
Now it felt different.
It felt like a place hiding secrets.
He arrived the next morning with Michael and Lauren.
Sophia stayed with a trusted employee.
Alexander didn’t want her anywhere near the conflict.
Not anymore.
The moment they entered the mansion, memories returned.
His childhood.
His father.
His mother.
Family dinners.
Business conversations.
Everything looked the same.
But Alexander knew better.
Things could look perfect while hiding something rotten underneath.
“Where would your father keep something important?” Michael asked.
Alexander looked around.
“My father trusted very few people.”
“Who?”
He looked upstairs.
“One person.”
Michael already knew.
“Your mother.”
Alexander nodded.
They searched through old records.
Business files.
Storage rooms.
Private offices.
Nothing.
Hours passed.
Then Lauren noticed something.
“Alexander.”
He turned.
“What?”
She pointed at a painting.
A large portrait of his father.
“There’s something strange.”
Michael examined it.
The painting was slightly uneven.
He removed it carefully.
Behind it was a small metal box.
Alexander’s heart started racing.
Because he remembered that box.
As a child, his father once told him:
“Some things should only be opened when the truth matters more than comfort.”
He opened it.
Inside were several documents.
A handwritten letter.
And a small recording device.
Alexander picked up the letter.
The handwriting was familiar.
His father.
He unfolded it.
Alexander,
If you are reading this, something has happened that made you question the people closest to you.
His hands tightened.
Lauren watched silently.
Your mother is intelligent. More intelligent than anyone realizes. But power changes people.
Alexander looked up.
Michael stopped breathing.
He continued reading.
I discovered financial movements that concerned me. Money was being moved without explanation.
His eyes moved faster.
I confronted Victoria. She denied everything. But I knew something was wrong.
Alexander felt sick.
His father knew.
He knew.
If anything happens to me, protect my family. Especially my son.
The letter ended with one final sentence.
Never let Victoria control your future.
The room became silent.
Then the recording device suddenly activated.
A voice filled the room.
Victoria.
Younger.
But unmistakable.
“I need you to understand, Robert. The Sterling name belongs to this family.”
A man responded.
Alexander recognized his father.
“That doesn’t mean you can control everyone.”
Victoria laughed.
“You still don’t understand.”
A pause.
“I’m doing what’s necessary.”
The recording continued.
Then came words that made Alexander’s blood freeze.
“Lauren will never take my granddaughter away from me.”
The recording stopped.
Nobody moved.
Lauren covered her mouth.
“She knew.”
Alexander stared at the device.
His mother knew everything.
Not just about the money.
Not just about the divorce.
About Sophia.
From the beginning.
Then Michael found another document inside the box.
A legal agreement.
Signed years ago.
Alexander read the title.
And his face changed.
Because it wasn’t about money.
It was about inheritance.
And the person who benefited if Sophia disappeared...
Was not Victoria.
May you like
It was someone else.
Someone inside the Sterling family.
