Chapter 7 - THE MAN BEHIND THE PLAN

Alexander stared at the signature.

He had seen that name before.

Not in years.

But he remembered.

Richard Vale.

His father’s former business partner.

A man who once sat at the Sterling family dinner table.

A man who once called Alexander “like a son.”

A man who disappeared after being accused of financial fraud.

Everyone believed Richard had destroyed his own career.

But now his name was sitting inside a document created to separate Alexander from his daughter.

“What was he doing with my mother?” Alexander asked.

Michael looked uncomfortable.

“We don’t know yet.”

Alexander placed the papers on the table.

“No.”

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

“We find out.”

Lauren watched him carefully.

She saw something different in him.

Three years ago, Alexander was a man who trusted the people around him.

Tonight, he was someone who questioned everything.

“Alexander…”

He looked at her.

“Yes?”

“Be careful.”

The warning surprised him.

“You’re worried about me?”

Lauren looked down.

“I’m worried about Sophia.”

Those words softened him.

Because that was the only thing that mattered now.

Their daughter.

Not revenge.

Not money.

Not the Sterling name.

Sophia.

Michael opened his laptop.

“I started digging into the accounts.”

“And?”

“The money trail is complicated.”

Alexander crossed his arms.

“Explain.”

“The five thousand dollars wasn’t going directly into Victoria’s company.”

“Then where?”

“Several accounts.”

Michael turned the screen.

“Small transfers. Different companies. Different names.”

Lauren leaned closer.

“She hid it.”

“Yes.”

Michael nodded.

“Whoever did this wanted the money to disappear.”

Alexander looked at the numbers.

One hundred eighty thousand dollars.

Money meant for his daughter.

Money that could have paid for food.

Medical care.

A better home.

Instead, it vanished.

“How long did this take?” Alexander asked.

“Years of planning.”

The room became silent.

Because that was the terrifying part.

This wasn’t an accident.

It wasn’t one mistake.

Someone built a system.

A system designed to keep him away.

Then Alexander noticed something.

One company name.

He recognized it.

“Wait.”

Michael looked up.

“What?”

“That company.”

He pointed.

“Sterling Legacy Foundation.”

Michael nodded.

“Yes.”

Alexander’s face changed.

“That foundation was created by my father.”

Lauren looked confused.

“What does that mean?”

Alexander slowly stood.

“My father created it before he died.”

“What does it do?”

“Family assets.”

Michael nodded.

“Exactly.”

Alexander stared at the screen.

“But my father left control of that foundation to…”

He stopped.

Because he already knew.

Victoria.

His mother.

“She controlled everything.”

Lauren whispered.

Alexander nodded.

“And she still does.”

Before anyone could speak, Alexander’s phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

“Hello?”

A man’s voice spoke.

“You should stop looking into your mother’s accounts.”

Alexander’s eyes narrowed.

“Who is this?”

“You already know.”

Richard Vale.

Alexander stood straight.

“Where are you?”

A quiet laugh.

“You’re asking the wrong question.”

“What question should I ask?”

The man paused.

Then said:

“Ask yourself why your father trusted your mother with everything.”

Alexander felt a chill.

“What are you talking about?”

The voice became colder.

“Your father knew Victoria was dangerous.”

Alexander froze.

“That’s impossible.”

“Is it?”

A pause.

Then Richard said:

“Your father left evidence.”

Alexander’s breathing slowed.

“Where?”

But the call ended.

Michael immediately tried tracing it.

Nothing.

Blocked.

Encrypted.

Gone.

Lauren looked at Alexander.

“What did he mean?”

Alexander stared at the phone.

Then at the old family documents.

“My father knew something.”

And for the first time...

May you like

Alexander wondered if the biggest lie didn’t begin three years ago.

Maybe it began decades ago.
