Chapter 13 - THE TRUTH GOES PUBLIC

Adrian stared at Grace.

There were a hundred reasons to stop the release.

Market collapse.

Lawsuits.

Board panic.

Federal investigations.

Losses in the billions.

Every instinct he had developed over twenty years screamed one thing.

Control the damage.

Hide weakness.

Protect the company.

Then he remembered himself standing outside his own gate.

Dirty.

Hungry-looking.

Powerless.

He remembered Victor’s contempt.

Grace’s plate of fruit.

Her words.

I’d rather explain why I fed a hungry man than explain why I watched one suffer.

Adrian released Charles.

“Let it go.”

Victoria stared.

“Are you insane?”

“Probably.”

“Our stock will collapse.”

“Maybe.”

“We’ll lose control.”

Adrian looked at her.

“You already lost control.”

Malcolm asked, “You’re sure?”

“No.”

Adrian took a breath.

“Do it anyway.”

At 11:03 a.m., files began appearing online.

Within minutes, phones across the mansion exploded with notifications.

WHITMORE GLOBAL SCANDAL.

CHARITY FUNDS DIVERTED.

SECRET FAMILY HEIR REVEALED.

BILLIONAIRE CEO ACCUSED OF ABUSIVE WORKPLACE CULTURE.

Adrian read that headline longest.

Grace noticed.

“Hurts?”

“Yes.”

“Is it false?”

He looked at her.

“No.”

That answer surprised her.

Police took Charles and Victor away.

Victoria remained under investigation.

Samuel agreed to testify.

Reporters gathered beyond the gates.

Hundreds of them.

The same gate where Adrian had been shoved hours earlier.

Malcolm approached.

“The board wants you on a call.”

“No.”

“They’re asking whether you’ll resign.”

Adrian looked toward the windows.

“Maybe I should.”

Malcolm stared.

“I never thought I’d hear you say that.”

“Neither did I.”

Grace sat beside her mother.

Adrian approached.

“Grace.”

She looked up.

“I owe you an apology.”

“One?”

He almost smiled.

“Several.”

She waited.

“I treated employees like tools.”

“Yes.”

“I thought fear made organizations stronger.”

“Yes.”

“I was wrong.”

Grace studied him.

“That part sounded painful.”

“It was.”

Elaine smiled faintly.

Grace did not.

Adrian continued.

“I also had no right to test you without your knowledge.”

“No, you didn’t.”

“I’m sorry.”

Grace’s expression softened slightly.

“But?”

“There’s no but.”

She looked surprised.

Adrian nodded toward the gate.

“I’m going outside.”

“To reporters?”

“Yes.”

“What are you going to say?”

“The truth.”

“Which truth?”

“All of it.”

Adrian walked away.

Malcolm followed.

Grace watched.

At the front steps, cameras flashed.

Reporters shouted.

“Mr. Whitmore!”

“Did your sister steal foundation funds?”

“Is Grace Miller your cousin?”

“Are you resigning?”

Adrian stepped to the microphone.

For once, he had no prepared statement.

No legal team.

No polished talking points.

He looked at hundreds of faces.

Then said,

“This morning, I dressed as a homeless man because I wanted to test the character of people who worked for me.”

The crowd erupted.

Adrian raised a hand.

“What I discovered was not their failure.”

He paused.

“It was mine.”

Inside the mansion, Grace slowly stood.

Adrian continued.

“I built a culture where fear was rewarded and compassion was treated as weakness.”

Then a reporter shouted,

“Are you admitting liability?”

Adrian almost smiled.

“I’m admitting responsibility.”

But before he could continue, Malcolm’s phone buzzed.

He read the message.

His face changed.

He leaned toward Adrian.

“We have a bigger problem.”

Adrian covered the microphone.

“What?”

May you like

Malcolm whispered,

“Redstone just launched a hostile takeover.”
