Chapter 1 - THE MAN AT HIS OWN GATE

The security guard shoved the old beggar so hard his shoulder slammed into the stone pillar.

“Get the hell away from this gate.”

Victor Haines pointed toward the road.

“This isn’t a shelter.”

The beggar steadied himself.

His coat was torn.

His beard was filthy.

His boots looked ready to split apart.

But behind the dirt, Adrian Whitmore’s eyes were cold and perfectly alert.

Victor had no idea he had just put his hands on the billionaire who owned the mansion behind him.

Whitmore House rose through the Connecticut morning fog like a palace.

Seventeen acres.

Thirty-two rooms.

Four kitchens.

An indoor pool.

A private art gallery.

A wine cellar worth more than most people’s homes.

Adrian owned every stone.

Yet that morning, no one recognized him.

That was exactly what he wanted.

Two days earlier, his closest advisor, Malcolm Reed, had accused him of building a world where people respected money instead of humanity.

“Take away your suit and your name,” Malcolm had said, “and you might finally learn who people really are.”

Adrian had decided to test him.

Now he was already regretting what he was learning.

“I just asked for food,” Adrian said hoarsely.

Victor laughed.

“And I told you to move.”

He raised a hand again.

“Victor.”

The voice came from behind him.

A young maid stood on the garden path holding a plate of sliced apples and toast.

Grace Miller.

Twenty-eight.

Quiet.

Nearly invisible among the mansion staff.

Victor scowled.

“Go back inside.”

Grace didn’t move.

“He said he’s hungry.”

“Not your problem.”

Grace looked at Adrian.

Not with disgust.

Not with pity.

Simply as another human being.

She walked to the gate.

Victor blocked her.

“You open that gate, I report you.”

Grace hesitated.

Adrian noticed.

The job mattered to her.

Her fingers tightened around the plate.

Then Victor smiled.

“That’s what I thought.”

Grace stepped around him.

She pushed the plate through the bars.

“Sir, would you like some fruit?”

Adrian stared at her.

“You could lose your job.”

Grace lowered her voice.

“Then I’ll lose it for feeding someone.”

Victor grabbed her wrist.

“Enough.”

Grace jerked away.

Adrian almost dropped the act.

Almost.

Then the side door of the mansion flew open.

Head housekeeper Margaret Cole ran toward them.

Her face was white.

“Grace!”

Grace turned.

Margaret looked at the plate.

Then the beggar.

Then Victor.

“You need to come inside.”

“What happened?”

Margaret swallowed.

“Mr. Whitmore’s private safe has been opened.”

May you like

Grace froze.

“And someone used your employee code to get inside.”
