Chapter 12 - THE HEIR NO ONE KNEW EXISTED

Grace laughed once.

A broken sound.

“That’s not funny.”

“No one thinks it is,” Samuel said.

“You’re lying.”

“I wish I were.”

Grace looked at her mother.

“You told me Dad died.”

“I was trying to protect you.”

“From what?”

Elaine looked at Adrian.

“From this family.”

Adrian absorbed the words quietly.

Grace turned on Samuel.

“You disappeared for twenty-eight years?”

“I was forced out.”

“You couldn’t call?”

“I believed your mother and you were safer if nobody knew.”

Grace’s eyes burned.

“You believed wrong.”

Samuel took it.

He did not defend himself.

Adrian looked at Elaine.

“Did my father know?”

“Yes.”

“About Grace?”

Elaine nodded.

Adrian’s stomach tightened.

“Why does that matter?”

Samuel answered.

“Because of the original Whitmore family trust.”

Victoria entered behind them.

Her face was pale.

“No.”

Samuel turned.

Victoria whispered, “That document was destroyed.”

“I kept a copy.”

Adrian stared.

“What document?”

Samuel said, “Your grandfather’s trust required equal distribution among legitimate family branches.”

Adrian’s expression changed.

“Meaning?”

“Meaning when your father pushed me out and claimed I had no heirs, he took control of assets that were never entirely his.”

Grace shook her head.

“I don’t want money.”

Victoria laughed bitterly.

“Unfortunately, money wants you.”

Adrian glared at her.

Samuel continued.

“If Grace’s identity is established, she has standing to challenge ownership of a significant portion of Whitmore Global.”

Grace looked horrified.

“How significant?”

Samuel said, “Potentially twenty-five percent.”

Silence.

Grace sat down.

Yesterday she had been a maid accused of theft.

Today she had learned she might own billions.

Adrian watched her.

Not greed.

Not excitement.

Just shock.

Victoria looked at him.

“Now you understand why Benton took her mother.”

Adrian’s eyes sharpened.

“He knew.”

“Yes.”

“He planned to use Grace’s claim.”

“To destabilize both of us.”

Samuel nodded.

“Then buy company assets through Redstone while the family fought.”

Malcolm entered with Charles in handcuffs.

“We have another problem.”

Adrian almost laughed.

“Of course we do.”

Malcolm held up his phone.

“Benton scheduled the financial files for automatic release to the press.”

Victoria’s face drained.

“What files?”

“Everything.”

Foundation theft.

Trust fraud.

Board manipulation.

Samuel’s disappearance.

Adrian’s employee complaints.

Grace’s identity.

Grace stood.

“My name too?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

Malcolm checked.

“Forty-two minutes.”

Grace looked at her mother.

Adrian said, “Cancel it.”

“I’m trying.”

“Try faster.”

Malcolm looked at him.

“It’s encrypted.”

Adrian turned toward Benton.

“Password.”

Charles smiled.

“No.”

Victoria stepped forward.

“You’re going to prison.”

“Maybe.”

Charles leaned back.

“But before that happens, the world gets to watch the Whitmore family destroy itself.”

Adrian stared at him.

Charles smiled at Grace.

“And everyone will think the maid slept her way into an inheritance.”

Grace’s face changed.

Adrian grabbed Charles by the shirt.

“You say one more word about her—”

Grace interrupted.

“Adrian.”

He stopped.

She looked at Charles.

“Let him release it.”

Everyone turned.

Adrian frowned.

“What?”

Grace took a breath.

“Let the world see everything.”

May you like

Then she looked at Adrian.

“Unless there’s something else you’re afraid they’ll find.”
