CHAPTER 1 — THE HANDCUFFS DIDN'T END THE NIGHT
Daniel stared at the federal agents as if the scene had to be some elaborate joke.
"There must be a misunderstanding," he said calmly, smoothing the sleeve of his white coat. "I'm the director of this hospital."
The lead agent didn't blink.
"Turn around."
The smile disappeared.
Claire sat frozen on the ultrasound bed, one hand over her swollen belly. The steady rhythm of her baby's heartbeat still echoed through the room.
Ba-bump.
Ba-bump.
Tears filled her eyes.
"Mom..."
I walked over and squeezed her hand.
"Keep listening to your baby."
Daniel finally looked at me.
"What did you do?"
I met his eyes without flinching.
"I believed my daughter."
His expression darkened.
"You think this is over?"
The agents secured handcuffs around his wrists.
As they led him toward the hallway, nurses and patients watched in stunned silence.
Someone began recording.
Within minutes, videos of the famous hospital director being arrested spread across social media.
Daniel twisted his head toward Claire.
"You'll regret this."
Before he could say another word, the elevator doors closed.
Claire suddenly burst into tears.
"I thought... he'd kill me before anyone believed me."
I wrapped my arms around her carefully.
"Not anymore."
But two floors below...
Daniel's chief financial officer quietly deleted an entire folder from the hospital's private servers.
He whispered into his phone.
"Phase Two."
May you like
Then he disappeared through a staff-only exit.
