Chapter 5 - WHAT THE CAMERA HEARD

They didn't watch the video in the hallway.
Emma called Nora. An hour later, Luis sat in a small conference room with a lawyer who represented hotel employees. His knee bounced under the table.
“I have a kid,” he said. “I can't be a hero.”
“You can be a witness,” the lawyer answered. “We'll take this one step at a time.”
They preserved the original recording and noted when and where Luis had made it. Then everyone watched.
The screen showed an auction banner, a passing waiter, and Victoria bending over Isabella's chair.
“You received the summary,” Victoria said. “That's all you need.”
“A summary isn't an account,” Isabella replied. “Families are being turned away.”
“Lower your voice.”
“Then stop giving me reasons to raise it.”
Victoria glanced toward the crowd. Her smile stayed in place, but her fingers tightened around the wheelchair handle.
“Sign it. Or the transportation program closes, and those people can thank you.”
Isabella pushed the paper away.
Victoria's hand rose.
Emma entered the frame so fast her tray tilted. The recording caught the sound of glass sliding, then her fingers closing around Victoria's wrist.
Luis exhaled as if he'd been underwater.
Vincent, who had joined them after the lawyers finished speaking with Luis, watched the clip once more. He did not say a word.
“Release it,” Emma said. “People think I attacked her.”
Nora nodded. “With Luis's permission, we can provide an authenticated copy through your lawyer. He deserves a say, too.”
Luis looked at Emma. “Use it.”
The full clip changed the conversation within hours. Guests who had stayed silent suddenly remembered how appalled they had been.
Emma ignored their messages.
Vincent placed a printout beside her father's denial letter.
“The auditors pulled the fund's payment register,” he said.
Daniel Carter's name appeared halfway down the page.
Emergency treatment assistance: $48,000.
Status: paid.
Emma read the entry twice.
“We never got this.”
“I know.”
“Then where did it go?”
Vincent turned over another page. The money had been sent to a company listed as a medical services coordinator.
