Chapter 12 - THE OFFER

Victoria asked for a meeting through the lawyers.
Ruth told Emma she didn't have to attend.
“I want to hear it,” Emma said.
They met in Ruth's office. Victoria arrived without diamonds. The absence looked deliberate.
“This has gone beyond anything I intended,” she began.
Emma kept her hands in her lap.
“Which part?”
Victoria ignored the question. Her lawyer outlined an offer: compensation, a public correction, and a private resolution of Emma's civil claims. No agreement could erase a criminal investigation, he acknowledged, but they hoped to avoid further public conflict.
Then Victoria made it personal.
“Your father could get the best care. Your sister could finish school without debt. You could finally stop carrying everyone.”
Emma felt the words land exactly where Victoria intended.
She wanted that life. She wanted a grocery cart filled without arithmetic. She wanted to sleep without hearing her father's cough through the wall.
Ruth touched the folder. “We'll review the terms privately.”
“There's one thing I need to understand,” Emma said. “Why did you raise your hand?”
Victoria stared at her.
“You could have walked away.”
“She was making a scene.”
“She was sitting in a wheelchair asking about missing money.”
A flush climbed Victoria's neck.
“You have no idea what it takes to keep donors happy.”
“I know what it takes to serve them dinner.”
For a second, the polished expression broke.
“I built that fund into something people respected.”
“People respected the families you put in the brochures. You should have tried respecting them yourself.”
Victoria stood. Her lawyer stood with her.
Emma didn't reject the right to compensation. Ruth would handle that. But she would not sign a false account, praise Victoria, or agree to hide what she had witnessed.
After they left, Emma sat very still.
“I hated wanting the money,” she said.
“Needing money doesn't make you dishonest,” Ruth answered. “That's what they were counting on you forgetting.”
At six, Paul called Ruth's office asking to speak through his own attorney. He had been suspended after the board meeting.

He wanted to cooperate.
And he still had the document Victoria had wanted Isabella to sign.
