Chapter 14 - A ROOM FULL OF WITNESSES

The meeting was held in the same ballroom.

Emma almost turned around when she saw the chandeliers. Her body remembered the room before her mind could tell it things were different.

Lily took her hand.

“You can be scared and still walk.”

Daniel had been discharged that morning. He sat near the aisle, wearing his good jacket over a shirt Lily had ironed.

Isabella waited beside him.

“Your daughter has been bossing me around,” Daniel told her.

“Good. Someone should.”

Emma laughed. Then Margaret called the meeting to order.

No auction. No orchestra. Just the preliminary findings, the emergency plan, and the families whose names had once been columns in a report.

Victoria rose when the payment records appeared.

“These are disputed allegations. Several people here have financial reasons to exaggerate.”

Emma felt Lily's hand tighten.

Ruth leaned toward her. “Stay with what you know.”

When Margaret called her name, Emma carried two letters to the microphone.

“This one told my father there was no money,” she said. “This one says forty-eight thousand dollars was paid for his treatment.”

She set them side by side.

“He got neither the money nor the treatment it was supposed to buy. You don't have to decide every accusation tonight to understand that he needs help.”

The room stayed quiet.

“A man called yesterday whose wife didn't live long enough to wait for this meeting. Please don't close the fund because protecting it has become embarrassing.”

Victoria approached the front, ignoring her lawyer's whispered warning.

“You have turned one regrettable moment into a career.”

Emma stepped back from the microphone.

Before Victoria could reach her, Luis stood. So did Claire. Then Daniel, slowly, with Lily beside him.

Isabella rolled forward.

“You will speak to her from there,” she said.

Security moved into the aisle. Victoria stopped.

Nobody had to catch her wrist this time.

Margaret resumed the meeting. The donors approved immediate support under outside supervision, and several committed funds to keep the program running while recovery efforts continued.

Emma returned to her seat, trembling.

Vincent waited until she looked up.

“They listened,” he said.

“They stood,” she answered.

As the room emptied, an investigator who had arranged to collect the original documents spoke quietly to Nora. Adrian had agreed to a formal interview through his lawyer.

He was ready to explain the payments.

And the people who ordered them.
