The ledger destroyed reputations overnight.
Officials resigned.
Investigations opened.
Police commanders were suspended.
Carlo disappeared.
But one hostage remained.
Luca.
Daniel’s son.
Alessandro refused to abandon him.
For three days, they searched.
Then Emma noticed something adults missed.
She saw one of Carlo’s photographs on Marco’s desk.
“That man came to our apartment.”
Alessandro turned.
“When?”
“Before Mom got sick.”
Sophia went pale.
“What?”
Emma nodded.
“He talked to Mrs. Turner downstairs.”
Alessandro immediately searched Sophia’s building.
Inside the basement, they discovered surveillance equipment.
Carlo had been watching Sophia for months.
On one wall were photographs.
Sophia.
Emma.
The mansion.
The hospital.
Daniel.
Luca.
Then Marco found a map.
An old Moretti estate in upstate New York was circled.
They drove through the night.
At dawn, Alessandro entered the estate.
Luca was inside.
