Chapter 14 - THE TRUTH BEFORE THE CITY

Carlo Moretti’s trial became national news.
The blue ledger exposed decades of corruption.
Mateo Delgado’s conviction was formally vacated.
His name was cleared.
Sophia attended the hearing.
Emma sat beside her.
When the judge announced Mateo’s exoneration, Sophia covered her face.
Emma whispered,
“Grandpa wasn’t bad?”
Sophia pulled her close.
“No.”
“He was brave.”
Across the courtroom, Alessandro lowered his head.
Vittorio’s role was exposed too.
Not everything about Alessandro’s father was heroic.
He had built a violent organization.
He had hurt people.
He had made choices his son could never defend.
But in the end, Vittorio had tried to stop it.
Alessandro decided trying wasn’t enough.
The Moretti organization would end with him.
He sold businesses connected to corruption.
Closed others.
Cooperated with investigations.
Kept only legitimate companies.
People called him weak.
He didn’t care.
One afternoon, Sophia visited the mansion.
She found Alessandro inside the study.
Emma was cleaning the window.
Again.
Sophia stared at her daughter.
“Emma.”
Emma froze.
“I’m helping.”
“You are not employed here.”
Alessandro raised both hands.
“I told her that.”
Emma frowned.
“But there was a streak.”
Sophia laughed.
Then Alessandro handed her an envelope.
Sophia’s expression changed.
“What is this?”
“A scholarship.”
“I told you—”
“Not for you.”
Sophia opened it.
The Mateo Delgado Foundation.
A fund for children of household workers, drivers, service employees, and families struggling with medical emergencies.
Sophia stared at him.
“You named it after my father?”
“No.”
Alessandro looked toward Emma.
“She did.”
Emma smiled.
“I picked Grandpa.”
Sophia began crying.
Alessandro looked away to give her privacy.
But Sophia stepped forward.
And hugged him.
He froze.
Then slowly hugged her back.
Emma wrapped her arms around both of them.
For the first time, the Moretti mansion didn’t feel like an empire.
It felt like a home.
But one question remained.
What would Alessandro do with the room where his father had ruled through fear?
Emma answered it before anyone asked.
May you like
“Make it somewhere kids aren’t scared.”
And Alessandro knew exactly what to do.
