Chapter 9 - THE PRICE OF THE TRUTH

The recovered video had no sound, but it showed enough.

Rosa entered carrying Lucia.

Frank Doran followed.

Vale led them toward the laundry room, then stepped outside and looked both ways before closing the service door.

Twenty minutes later, Doran wheeled out a covered cart.

Then he returned alone.

He held Lucia against one shoulder, awkwardly, like something he wanted off his hands.

Elena couldn't watch the next part standing up.

He placed the baby in the dumpster.

Checked his phone.

Walked away.

“No,” Lorenzo said.

It wasn't a denial. It was the sound of a man arriving too late at something already done.

The timestamp showed Elena appearing seventeen minutes later.

Seventeen minutes between a man deciding the child could be discarded and a woman deciding she couldn't.

Bell paused the footage.

“We have people looking for Doran.”

Lorenzo's face was empty.

“Find him first,” Elena told Bell.

She didn't need to explain.

That afternoon, Vittorio arrived with an attorney and a stack of documents.

“You need rest,” he told his nephew. “The companies need direction. Give me temporary authority. I'll manage things while you focus on Lucia.”

Lorenzo studied the pen his uncle placed before him.

“For how long?”

“Until you're yourself.”

“And what if I'm never myself again?”

Vittorio offered a comforting smile.

“We'll handle that as a family.”

Elena watched from Lucia's doorway as Lorenzo turned the pages without signing.

After Vittorio left, Bell called with a harder request: financial records reaching back years, including businesses Lorenzo had kept separate from his legitimate shipping companies.

He stood beside the window for a long time.

“If I give you those, I don't control what happens next.”

“No,” Bell said.

“My daughter could lose her father.”

Elena answered before the detective could.

“She almost lost her life while everybody protected your secrets.”

He flinched.

Then he called his attorney.

“Give them the records.”

His attorney started to object.

“All of them,” Lorenzo said.

Across the room, his phone displayed a new message from an unfamiliar number.

The photograph showed Elena leaving the hotel with Bell.
