Chapter 1 - SOMETHING IN THE GARBAGE

The baby stopped crying just as Elena lifted the dumpster lid.
That silence scared her more than the sound that had made her turn around.
“Oh, no. No, sweetheart.”
She reached past wet cardboard and pulled out a soaked bundle. A six-month-old girl stared up at her, dark curls stuck to her forehead, lips tinged blue. Her chest moved so faintly Elena had to look twice.
It was almost three in the morning. She had spent fourteen hours scrubbing rooms at the Chatzsworth Hotel. Bleach had split her knuckles. She had sixty-two dollars, overdue rent, and nothing at home worth stealing.
But she had a coat.
Elena opened it and pulled the baby against her chest.
The child's forehead felt frighteningly hot.
Her phone was already in her hand when an old memory rose: a social worker's car, a plastic bag of clothes, a woman saying there simply wasn't room for her anymore.
She started dialing for help, then stopped.
Fear made the decision before sense could catch up.
Forty minutes later, she stumbled into her basement apartment in Queens, breathless from running between trains and across frozen blocks.
The radiator hammered. Upstairs, somebody's television laughed.
Elena removed the wet shawl and found a label inside the baby's clothes.
Gucci.
Then a platinum chain slipped across her wrist.
Its pendant was a lion holding a dagger in its teeth.
She had seen that emblem on the cufflinks of a hotel guest who made managers stand straighter. On television, too, beside a name nobody said lightly.
Moretti.
Elena looked from the necklace to the baby's face.
Across Manhattan, Lorenzo Moretti stood in his penthouse with his daughter's empty blanket crushed in one hand.
His security chief, Nico, placed a tablet before him.
An alley camera showed a woman lifting a bundle from a dumpster and hiding it inside her coat.
“She's alive,” Nico said. “This was forty minutes ago.”
“Who has my daughter?”
“We're tracing the woman.”
Lorenzo watched the clip again. The woman's face was blurred, but the hotel logo on her work bag was clear.
In Queens, the baby's breathing caught.
Elena felt the tiny body struggle against her.
Suddenly, every childhood fear she had carried home seemed smaller than the child who might die because of it.

She grabbed her phone.
This time, she finished dialing.
